Visited four sake breweries in Kobe area. Among them this is my favorite. This brewery is smaller than others in the area but JMDG I sampled was the best for my taste. Ended up buying a bottle to take it back to US. Generally I travel light, so bringing a bottle of sake to take up space in my luggage is a privilege I try to avoid. Also the restaurant in the same compound is a must try. Reservation is required. My hotel's concierge was able to make a reservation for me a day before. You must try their Kaiseki-Ryori dinner set if you eat at the restaurant. One of my memorable meal in Japan.

I thought that the sake brewery would have a more organized tour, but instead it just had some signs in an area you can walk through. Additionally, we paid for our sake tastings, but then some Japanese came in and another employee started pouring them free tastings of everything. Kind of off-putting considering we had to pay.

Many of the sake produced here are Namazake which are unpasteurized and this have to be refrigerated at all time. These kind of sake are rarely exported and usually are consumed locally. What a shame because they are delicious! They also experiment with aging sake in sherry and other type of wine cask to produce sake that are richer in flavor and are consumed more like Shochu that you drink it on the rock or mix it with other drinks. The staff are friendly and very helpful.

This is a smaller brewery that I had not heard of, but read in various guides that this was one of the few in the Kobe/Nada area that you could visit that was still actively brewing. When we went and toured, they had just finished, so we didn't get to see anything actually happening, but the tour was still pretty informative, and in English!

There is a free tasting, and the gentleman doing the tasting with us (family group of 5 adults) was incredible. We tasted 6-7 different sakes/sake beverages, including a yuzu sake beverage and a sparkling sake beverage. I ended up buying quite a bit, so much of it was good! They were helpful in guiding us as to which sake beverages we could travel back with (some need to be refrigerated the whole time and so do not stand up to travel well). The store staff was also incredible - after asking if we were taking this home with us, they wrapped the bottles with bubble wrap and extra bags, and a cover bag to protect it from the rain outside.

We also did the paid tasting (still pretty inexpensive) during which we got to sample some of the more expensive ones not given during the free tasting. Highly recommend this experience.

Hamafukutsuru is a small brewery mixed in with the Kobe giants (Hakutsuru, Kikumasamune). There is an observation area where you can view the actual production facilities, then a tasting room/gift shop.

We went on the weekend, so there was nothing to see in the production area. It's not clear if that's operating during the week, or if that is an old production area not in regular use anymore, but I would recommend visiting during the week if possible.

The tasting was quite nice, with a number of interesting varieties including a very nice sparking sake, and sake aged in a sherry cask and a bourbon cask, along with a few of the regular sakes. The gift shop also included a number of foods, sake ice cream, a variety of sake cups, and other nice gifts.

Overall, a rather small place, but definitely worth a stop, especially if you're also visiting the big industrial sake makers nearby.
