The JR station in Kobe is absolutely massive. That leads to quite a bit of confusion when getting about. It's not too bad to be fair, after your first visit or two you get to see and understand the system!
Loads of shops and places to have a snack. It's clean, well lit and modern.

The outside of Kobe Station resembles an old train station but the inside it is very modern. The station is very close to Harbour Land and the shopping nearby by Sannomiya Station looks to be the busier of the two.

It was a Saturday morning and needed to book seats on our Kobe to Okayama trip and the only way to do this is to line up at the ticket counter. Even though every window was open, the queue was at its capacity, snaking its way out into the main area. I've never seen such a long queue.
By the way I was grateful for the opportunity to buy a Kobe Beef bento box at the Bento Counter there. I do suspect it was the culprit of my stomach ache a couple of hours later. Great idea for a bento box though.

JR Kobe Station is where you will end up after taking the train. Japan's public transportation is efficient and clean. Not really a tourist destination, but it takes you where you need to go.

This is a railway station all right but not where the Shinkansen stops( the bullet train stops at JR Kobe-Shinkansen station). Kobe Station is the one you have to alight at to go to the Kobe Harbor Land, the shopping and dining destination in Kobe. This appeared a smallish station but having all the amenities.

Well to start with it is your average train station in Japan and the main hub of Kobe, but this place also doubles onto a shopping mall and food court. On one exit you can go downstairs underground to a larger shopping complex which has direct access to Kobe Harbourland and on the other side it leads into the business end of Kobe. The station had some litter and appeared messy on the business side and was neat and tidy on the other side.

Not one of the better JR stations. A little confusing. Not as many food options as you would expect. Still, clean and typically Japanese.

This station is little if compared with the main station of the biggest Japanese city. But this is not bad: few things but easiest to find

During my stay in Kobe, this is the nearest JR station to our stay. It is clean, small but rather convenient as there are restaurants like McD, konbini 7-11 and Kohyo supermarket. There is also a foodcourt called the Food Garden. Tried the udon there, it was delicious, warm & filling.

It is also serves as entrance to Kobe Harborland.

Busses and taxis are conviniently located as well as bicycle parking area.

I liked this station. We traveled from Kyoto to here and left from here to Osaka. I found that the direction was easily found than Osaka & Kyoto station.
We found small cafe for breakfast and it was priced reasonable too.
