Japanese cities were on damage control from daily fire bombing. Children and students were mobilised to help with clearing the rubble. When the bomb hit at 8:15, many of them perished or had their lives changed.

Lovely monument dedicated to the students who were mobilised during the second world war to fight for Japan and more to the point, those who lost their lives so young in doing so.
It is close to the Atomic Bomb Dome and is one of many lovely memorials dotted around the Peace Park area that afford you the chance to pay your respects.

Another memorial to the victims of the war. What are the losses to Japanese killed by comparison with the Japan imperial army in Asia. Unfortunately, Japanese people do not remember their victims.

During World War ll, some 3 million students over the age of 12 were used as a labour force in Japan. As a consequence, there were some 7,000 young people working in Hiroshima who were killed when the Atomic bomb was dropped.
This is a memorial to them. It is next to the Atomic Bomb Dome, across the river from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. There are many chains of paper cranes hanging from it.
Yet another moving memorial to those who lost their lives in that event.

This memorial is dedicated to the children who were killed during the A-Bomb blast. The children had been brought in to help clear debris from previous bombings etc.

Maybe I was getting burned out on blocky grey memorials. Maybe it's because it was late and this area was full of mosquitoes. But I found this memorial ugly and it did not move me. The prior day I'd met a survivor of the bombing, and she told the tale of her 12-year-old brother who survived because he was sent to pull potatoes, while the rest of his class was killed in the bombing. With children of my own, of similar ages, I was moved near to tears. This monument lacked that sense of humanity. The only way this monument tells a story is by pressing a button and getting a dry description of why they built the monument. This monument is outclassed.

Mobilized Students were about high school age and were called upon to work in munitions factories and other war time work. The day the bomb fell, 7,000 of them died while demolishing houses to create fire lanes.
The memorial is a tall white tower. This particular monument touched me so much. Being a parent myself, I can imagine the grief of parents who lost their children that day. I have read that the children who did survive that awful day felt guilty about being alive.

This was built in May of 1967 with the aim of consoling the souls of over 10,000 students who died in the bombings during the Pacific War.

It is 12 meters tall, five stories and is decorated with the Goddess of Peace as well as 8 doves places around the tower.

Only a few minutes walk away from the Atomic Bomb Dome, this memorial is to remember the many thousands of children who were forced out of schools to work in factories, etc. Basically, innocence lost in favour of feeding the war monster.

In Hiroshima alone 9,000 children became 'mobilised'; nearly 7000 of them perished in the atomic bombing.

There is a plaque in front of the tower with two buttons, one narrates the information in Japanese, the other in English.

Very sobering when you realise that your own childhood was nothing as bad as what these poor souls went through, and they never got a chance to become adults like you have.

I had not realised that children over the age of 12 were working during the War, in clearing demolished buildings and clerical work. This monument commemorates those killed and particularly the thousands killed by the A-bomb. it has many paper cranes and I found it very moving.
