Gorgeous botanical garden with picturesque moutain/forest background, away from the city. The garden is quite big and features different types of plants, external gardens and greenhouses. I've visited many botanical gardens and I absolutely loved this one! Really stunning. I had brought my lunch, but there are facilities there where you can buy food and ice cream.

We first visited this botanical garden in December 2019 and again in Feb 2020 when we used Hiroshima as a base for travels in the region.
This garden was mainly visited by locals. We found direct access from Hiroshima Bus centre (Sogo dept store bldg) via bus 1-55 on level 3 to the Gardens takes ca 50 mins and Yen 590 one way the best choice. From the bus stop at the gardens , it takes ca 5 mins walking an uphill slope. If you are > 65, you get a discount too by showing your identification.
There were plenty of birds in December (locals know when and where to go - just look for a group of photographers with long lenses) but less so in Feb but I managed to take some photos of birds by the Japanese garden plum trees ( white and pink Ume/Japanese apricots).
The cafe serving Japanese meals at reasonable prices was a good place to have a good view of the garden and also to rest).
The annual pass Yen 530 (?) was cheap for access to 3 places viz. botanical gardens, zoo and the insectarium (very hard to access if you do not have a car).
Shame that it is not well visited.

A perfect place to go on a rainy day as the plants don't mind and there are lots of greenhouses to get undercover.Catch the bus from the Hiroshima Bus Centre at the side of Sogo Department Store (entrance thro the store)Just south of Hiroshima Castle.580 yen from Gate 2.Get a timetable from ticket office.Bus takes about 40 minutes and drops you right at the door and picks up from the same place. The entrance fee was 170 yen for us pensioners and I think under 500 yen for Adults. The gardens are huge and you can easily spend hours here. There is an observation deck to get a great 360 view of the surroundings which would be great at sunset. There is a caffateria with hot food too. They do have a resident wild pig but it was sheltering from the rain.Great place to visit.

I really like this place, spacious, and has an assortment of collections of plants and animals. Such as the common occurrence of various places I visited in Japan, information in English is very difficult to obtain, even if the provider of the information has tried to give an explanation, but in Japanese :)
