A beautiful shrine to visit during any season, Hokkaido Shrine is well worth a visit. The shrine is a short hike from the nearby Maruyama Koen subway station (Tozai) line and is free to enter.

The Hokkado Jingu Shrine hoses four deities, including the Emperor Meiji. The Shrine is approached through a torii. It is bad manners to enter the Shrine through the middle of the torii. The torii is meant to frame the Shrine to give the best view. The Shrine burned down in in 1974, but was rebuilt in 1978. The Shrine houses the guardian deities of Hokkaido, it is worthy of respect.

Set in Maruyama Park and approached along the Cherry Tree Boulevard from the 2nd Shrine Gate, the Hokkaido Jingu Shinto Shrine is probably impressive whatever season you choose to visit. Visiting in January when blanketed by snow, however, seems to elevate it to something extra-special.
Established in 1869, the centrepiece of the Main Shrine is an impressive A-framed building whose gold embellishments positively sparkle on a bright Winter's day. I was particularly fascinated by the wooden frame with wires that devotees tied their "wishes"/prayers around.
I rounded off my visit to this impressive Shrine by taking a break at the attractive Coffee Shop that sells hand-made cookies near the entrance to the Main Shrine, then walking back towards the Subway Station through the snow covered Park. Most enjoyable!

Cherry blossom lined road leads to the shrine. Has spacious grounds and an opportunity to see Shinto worship.

Hokkaido Jingu is a shrine affiliated to Japan's ancient religion, Shinto. Buddhism came later. Shinto is a form of naturalistic religion that is based on traditional practices. Hokkaido Jingu veneratres the early settlers of Hokkaido. Hokkaido Jingu is of moderen constructio, but it certainly radiates an atmosphere of peace and serenity. Shinto and Buddhism are not strictly competitors. Shinto goes back into the mists of time and is said to be "more Japanese."

Hokkaido Jingu is a larger shrine built to commemorate the Japanese founding of Sapporo and colonization of Hokkaido in general. It's a more modern shrine - plenty of dressed stone and concrete - but no less beautiful and peaceful for that. We saw a number of couples getting their photos taken in the temple, and there are a number of smaller shrines nearby. It's easily accessible from public transportation and Mt. Maruyama is right next door, as well as its path leading to the summit, as well as all of its shrines to Kannon.

The shrine is in a very nice and peaceful park. The shrine is a rather simple Shinto one. The peacefulness of the surroundings enhanced my surreal experience during the visit to the shrine.
