The attraction here is the fact that this building and its pleasant grounds is out of place smack in the middle of Sapporo city. The red brick facade and the colonial architecture provide a contradiction of sorts - an old western-inspired building surrounded by sleek modern buildings in the middle of a Japanese city. Great for photos.

The Former Government Building is a good place to get history tidbits about Hokkaido and Sapporo. At the 2nd floor we found displays about territorial dispute against Russia (which is now resolved) and info on their former provincial governors.

The building's architecture is a pleasant change from the modernity of the majority of Sapporo's buildings, and is accessible by the nearby underground passage, connected to the major buildings and shopping malls in the city's centre.

I wandered around this place while walking about in Sapporo. Just though I would check it out. The structure is nice solid construction. The real beauty is in the surrounding landscape. Beautiful ponds surrounded by interesting trees. Worth walking around.

We went there both in Sakura season and summer. Great place for dine photo shoot along the walking trail from Odori Park to Sapporo Station.

If you like history & museums of some sort, this is a place for you. If not, you will probably find this place boring. Admittance is free. The red brick building is classic and holds a historic meaning. There is one particular room that explains all that in details. For non-Japanese speakers, there are folders near the entrance with various... More
