Iconic historical building that formed the seat of government for a period of time.
I typically visit the grounds every time I am in Sapporo. It is right downtown, adjacent to upscale shopping and dining venues and within a few minutes' walk from from the south side exits of Sapporo station. Construction is from classic red-orange brick, which has given the building its nickname among locals: Aka Renga (Red Brick).

Until its closure in autumn of 2019, the building housed a number of historical displays and artifacts as well as information for tourists.

It is a handsome building, definitely a point of pride for the city of Sapporo. And rightly so ... the citizens have done a fine job of maintaining and restoring the building and grounds through the years.

The building will remain closed for a major renovation, during which it is being converted to a multi-purpose public space. However, the gardens were open when I visited in summer 2020. They are welcoming and tranquil, access is free, and gates are typically open during daylight hours.

Stop by on your next trip. You won't be disappointed!

I walked around the Government building recently. After a lot of snow, there were small paths carved out from other people around the building. I didn't enter or anything but I enjoyed viewing the exterior of the building and the park. At night, the building was lit up and looked great! The architecture is unique for Japan, so I recommend at least walking by.

The only reason for not scoring this landmark attraction higher was because the building is still undergoing restoration works. Was looking forward to view its architecture and interior.
But they did have a creative idea of placing a full size picture the structure as sound and construction protection around the entire building, so that visitors can still imagine how the entire compound looks like.
It’s good that the place is still open to public as the compound itself is beautiful with interesting places for photo shot, the biggest draw is probably the 2 ponds with its ‘resident’ ducks. So it is still worth taking a stroll around just to escape from the city. Many of the local also uses it as a shortcut to reach buildings on opposite sides.
When visiting saw some gardeners working on planting more flowers to decorate the grounds, so it should look amazing in the coming weeks.
Looking forward to be back again when the restoration works have completed.

You must visit here if you come to sapporo, in order to understand the history of the place. It's free of charge and has a nice garden around it. Walking distance from both Sapporo station and Odori park.

This is a Baroque style red brick building. It is a museum but currently closed due to renovation.

The garden and landscape in front of the building is very scenic. It is a good place for a stroll and snap some photos.

There’s currently a little conservation work viewing deck that lets you view the dome (currently in the ground due to the reconstruction). I accidentally missed this as I believed the building was completely closed. Not sure how big it is as when I went to explore the gardens, it was still too early.

The gardens include some lovely ponds and there were a lot of people walking through to get to work. You can also currently see some chimneys on the ground.

The scenery is great especially at night with lighting all around and if you happen to be there when there is a light snow fall, it makes the whole scene perfectly unreal!

You get lots of historical info with a short visit to the old Hokkaido Government Office Building.

This is a must visit when in Sapporo. But it remains to be seen when the reconstruction would be eventually finished . However photo ops still abound that it remains a highlight in every season in this lovely city .

Nice park to walk around. I think there is a museum but its currently closed? So I was only able to wander around outside. I would go back again when the museum is reopened.
