I thought at first that this would be an exciting trip, but Songcheng city is nothing but dancing and rubbish, which was foolish. It is supposed to give us something about the history of the Song dynasty, but the only thing shown and displayed there is the modern building. The show, which was thought to be one of the greatest shows in the whole world, was nothing but flashes of green light, which nearly made me blind. Really not recommended, no matter what advertisements you have seen about this whatsoever place, do not visit it!

It's supposed to be some kind of theme park, with Song Dynasty being the theme. Rather primitive and not well managed. But it attracts a lot of local package tour tourists. It has a show on Hangzhou. Local opinions suggest that the show is far better than Xihu Impression and thus it attract many. The show is OK but not impressive. And is quite expensive. I won't go back.

...the unique quirks of the crowds who are unbelievably rude.
We went for the show but there is a whole theme park built around the theme of romance from a historic local story.
The show really is a marvel of acrobatic and artistic wizardry. The stories are virtually impossible to follow without Mandarine language skills but on balance ...the unique quirks of the crowds who are unbelievably rude.

The show really is a marvel of acrobatic and artistic wizardry. The stories are virtually impossible to follow without Mandarine language skills but on balance that doesn’t matter. It’s a fabulous production.
What does matter is the behavior of the crowd. This show seats 3,000 at a time and all Chinese are encouraged to see it once at least during their lives. This means there is huge excitement and that leads to very selfish behaviors. Brace yourself for people talking throughout at the top of their voices, standing up at random times, and most annoyingly, the constant cell phone recording which sees your view destroyed with physical obstructions and bright screens EVERYWHERE. And just when you’re doing your best to ignore the incredible rudeness, they start leaving early to avoid a rush so you see even less.
Aaarrrggghhh!!!
The operators really should do more to protect the experience of everybody.

We only speak english, but thought this wouldn't be an issue because most of Hangzhou is so kind and accommodating. It was a problem from the get go, though. We had to wait in two long lines because the first ticket girl couldn't figure out what to do with us. Once we got in we had a yummy lunch and enjoyed the little playground. Then we went to the show. The theater was so hot and smelt like cigarettes so much that I only half enjoyed the show. There were some very cool parts, but over all the it was only ok. Walking around the park was fun. People were friendly and it was fun to pretend we were back in time. But, the park had trash everywhere and it smelled bad and there was a lot of fake versions of things that you can see for free ten minutes away. Overall I say skip this and enjoy some of the more authentic treasures Hangzhou has to offer. You'll save money, learn more and have more fun.

The theme park here was more than a bit cheesy to my Western eyes. However the show "The Legend of Romance" was magnificent ! This production heaped spectacle on spectacle until your jaw dropped to the floor. Lasers, dancing, martial arts, waterfalls, real horses, rapelling soldiers, indoor rain .......whew !! Bigger and better than Ben Hur !

First of all, you can buy tickets to the show from the gate only 1 hour 20 minutes in advance. We were there in good time and had to wait for a while. Still there was enough time to walk around the theme park. There was a lot going on and you could spend there few hours.
Our goal was to see the show. And what a show it was! I have never seen anything similar. Big dancer groups, beautiful costumes, amazing props, running water etc.
I definitely recommend this show if you are visiting Hangzhou only for a short time. You will not get bored.

Our trip to this theme park was an amazing experience. Our excursion was actually for the Romance Show, but we arrived early enough that we had some time to explore the amusement park. The park was really interesting with lots of things to see and explore, such as what different classes of homes and villages looked like as well as shop for goodies and souvenirs. They also have some statues and temples that give you a great vantage point and view of the park if you climb up to the top. Another really cool feature is that they had a park patron water challenge course where brave and adventurous park goers could test their skills with monkey bars or foam lily pads across a small man made pond among other challenges. It was entertaining to watch the brave souls challenge themselves - win or lose! There are also entertainment shows at the park. Some are included, such as the fire eaters and martial arts skills shows, and others are extra, such as the absolutely amazing Romance Show. At night the park is also a lot of fun, since the Romance Show has a post-view outside with one of the characters flying high over the crowd, that ends in a big dance party type celebration at the end of the night. I would highly recommend both spending some time exploring this park as well as seeing the spectacular Romance Show.

Well, I didn't really expect this at first. We all just went by a taxi from my hostel and it took about RMB 45. We paid RMB 280 for the entrance fee and it included the shows inside.
It was like we were brought back to ancient time in China. We were walking down the alleys with traditional gambling house on the left, old prostitution house on the right. And even there was a love bridge where you could put a lock with your name an your partner's name on it. It was beautiful.
I watched two shows that day. The first one was in the old prostitution house which was also a museum for adults. FOR ADULTS. Seriously. But don't expect English translation during the show.
And come 30 minutes before the show if you want to get a seat.
For the next show was the impression of West Lake. It was great with all the settings and background. Totally breathtaking. The only thing that annoyed me was the Chinese themselves. They were all sitting and then standing. A little boy besides my friend was peeing on the floor and the mother did nothing. Cool. Totally cool.
The show was great, though. But it's not really a must.

Mostly here for the show. The show itself was good, but the audience, which consists of mainly local tour groups, was highly irritating. People kept snapping pictures with flash lights throughout the show, standing up and forcing others to do the same to see the performance, and one guy even talked loudly on the phone during much of the show. It's not an experience that I would like to go through again unfortunately. What a shame.

which area to sit for best unobstructed view of the play?

I agree with Canty Traveller, it definitely worth paying a little bit more for the front row seats. Otherwise seats along the center isle are also good to see performers coming down to the stage.
