Amazing museum! Organized in terms of topic, for example costumes, jewelry, pottery, literature etc. Most signs and labels also have English translations, and are very clear and informative. The museum itself is also very nice, with open hallways and a garden in the centre. It's a good alternative to visiting the minorities village.

It cost 30 to 35 yuan by taxi from center of town to museum which is right across the street from the nationalities village so good to combine the 2. First the museum to c the real life of the yunnan minorities and u can wander around for a hour or 2 before going to the village. Thier is a 50 percent discount for seniors( over 60) as well as the same discount for students so make sure u bring passport or student card to the nationalities village. Normal ticket price is 90 yuan 45 yuan with discount. Museum is FREE.

If you come here by bus, you will need to go to your left (east) across the main road to reach Yunnan Nationalities Museum, which is set back behind a small car park. If you just follow everyone else, you will likely end up at Yunnan Nationalities Village.

I mention this because some of the earlier reviewers obviously went to the village, not the museum.

The museum is housed in a modern building arranged on two floors around a main courtyard. On entry, which is free, you will receive informational leaflets and be asked to sign the visitors' book.

There are eight exibition halls showcasing many aspects of the history and culture of the nationalities that find themselves within the borders of Yunnan. There's a nice collection of traditional costumes and textiles, some interesting documents showing different writing systems, and plenty of other artefacts to appeal to someone with an interest in anthropology.

There is a handicrafts and gift shop, a separate book shop, and a tea house.

You can probably see everything comfortably in 1-2 hours.

One of my favorite Kunming museums; have been several times over the past 8 or 10 years. Went again this morning and was distressed to find that quite a few of the best exhibits are now closed. One example was the hall of masks and another was the hall
that exhibited methods of non-written communications used in remote villages.

Still has some worthwhile things to see, especially if you are new to Yunnan. The ethnic costumes and woven fabrics are good. But I saw no sign of any improvements; found no new exhibits. It's as though this fine museum is now a step child and nobody at the top cares.

Hope someone comes along with a grant money to give them a big budget and breathes new life into the project. Hope that happens soon. The book shop still has a good selection (mostly in Chinese.)

It's easy to reach using public bus number A1. Just take it to the end of the line. The museum is located across from the Minorities Village 民族村 and it's not far from West Hills 西山。

Admission free. Closed Mondays.

I was very interested in the minority groups of southern China and this museum has it all. Included are rooms explaining dress, textiles, pottery, literature, language, art, music, etc. One can spend hours here. And it's FREE! (It is across the road from the nationalities village tourist place)

Excellent museum showcasing items from the 26 minority groups in Yunnan. Detailed explanations in English make this a very rewarding experience. Located quite far from the core of Kunming, it can be reached by the A1 bus, which terminates at the museum at the south end of its route. Catch the same bus back. One central stop is beside the huge Walmart on Ren Min East Road. Four blocks east of Beijing Road.

This can be walked to from the Nationalities Village and is a small but fascinating museum with material from many aspects of village life. Exhibits are also labelled in English and are set out in a viewer friendly way. There is an excellent museum shop and book room.

The nationalities museum is a great place to discover things about China you don't know : what are the minorities, how do they live, why do they exist....
I remember the price was cheap or even free.
But, the museum est huge, like REALLY huge and if you want to visit everything you need at least 5 hours !

What a wonderful place to visit. I did not know about the various Nationalities in China, especially in central Yunan Province. Our guide spoke English and introduced us well to the varying cultures of the Nationalities. The local dress varies in many beautiful ways. This was by far a most exceptional experience.
