Historical building turned into a museum with nice display of photographs from the early 1900s. This was the place where many if the well known leaders of China were trained. Including some of the most decorated generals of modern China.

This site is well described in English as well as Chinese. Gives a great explanation of military development and importance of Kunming as a military centre. I wish there had been a bit more on the importance of Kunming as the retreat capital in WW2, though suspect some of this has been airbrushed.

The Military School is right on the side of the park in the centre of Kunming, so it's well worth dropping into on your strolls.

As a free attraction, it's worth a look. Though it is no longer in use, there are a few examples of old military training exercises around the courtyard. The permanent exhibition is in very good English and Chinese, though the temporary exhibition is only in Chinese.

This has been one of my favourite places in kunming. If you like history you will love the military school. There is a full walk through of the entire barracks, all with English signs and explanations. It's free entry and well worth a visit. You'll learn about some of China's great leaders and all about the uprising. It has lots of displays and tonnes of informations on different skills, people, uniforms, etc.

This is just across the street from green lake park. It started as a military school and trained many military leaders. They have the original wood floors and some original desks with copies of many instructions manuals. I like history so I really liked this.

The Military School was Kunming first military academy founded in 1899 and modeled after the western military model. The academy was a dying struggle by the fragile Qing Dynasty China to modernise the nation backward and vulnerable military capability.

It was constructed during the turbulent period when the weak feudal Qing imperial regime was no longer able to overcome and withstand the many foreign aggressions and demands. With a backward and fragile army, China has no match with the military supremacy of the foreign powers. The analogy was like an egg hitting against the hard concrete wall.

China was thus coerced to sign a number of unequal and unfair treaties with concessions and territories given to the military advanced foreign imperialists. Hongkong leased to the British, Macau to the Portugese, Qingdao to the Germans and many other unfair and unequal treaties were signed. The military supremacy of the foreign powers were dividing and colonalising China each occupying their own area of influence.

It was too late for the Qing China to realize that `Power come from the barrel of a gun'. However, the building of the military academy produced batches and batches of army leaders who only realized that revolution was the only answer to China survival and they had to overthrow the weak corrupted Qing regime in order to establish a militarily strong republican China. Many of the graduands of the School subsequently joined Dr Sun Yat Sen's fraternal revolutionary organizations to overthrow the Qing weak regime. Among them were prominent militarist strategists and pioneer figures of the Communist Party of China.

The military academy is ideally located opposite Cui Hu, with scenic lakeside view but deep in the military school the fiery sense of nationalism erupted. I have much respect for this military school and the many great patriotic and nationalistic leaders that she had nurtured.

The Military School has a tumultous history and in my view, one of the best advanced military school of her times that produced the best fine outstanding leaders that shaped the history of her country. Although the mustard yellow building appeared dilapidated and tattered, her historical significance cannot be denied.
