The landscapes are beautiful, and good views. However, you will probably see more color in the fall. Many of the fields were covered with plastic - as they plant they are now putting plastic down the rows (prevent wind damage? help retain moisture?) The road to Dongchuan came to an abrupt stop at a bridge that was out of commission. It wasn't noted on any maps or GPS - our driver and guide were quite surprised. The weather was hazy (or perhaps some air pollution). Without a polarizer, the pix are so-so.

Stayed overnight at Red land at Kunming Jindong Hotel in Hongtudi Village near Huashitou Village in the heart of the redlands. Hotel arranged a car and driver from mid afternoon till sunset and an hour before sunrise till mod morning for RMB 260. Visited 8 different locations with fantasic views - some good in morning some in afternoon. Beautiful landscape. Limited number of direct public busses from Kunming otherwise need to travel via Dongchuan Town.

If you are looking for 5-star hotels and experience, don't bother going there yet. The best you could find is probably 2-star's. Dirt roads, farms and beautiful scenery are what you will find there. However, construction is underway; I am sure it will be a high touristy spot with 5-star amenities in about 5 years.
If you don't mind skipping seeing the sunrise, you can do it in 1 day with your own private car and driver. It's about 3 hours each way from Kunming.
Don't pay more than 700 CNY for the car and driver.

Though still a laid back town, yet the colourful fields are truly amazingly. A place photographer would love to go.

Dongchuan Red Land is a place of beautiful and colorful terraces. We have a rental car with a driver cum guide to bring us there. We saw many colorful terraces as we were driven to see Shuipingzi Rice Terrance (the Moon Rice), sunset at Luoxiagou in Songmaopeng, then to Huagou Thousand years of Nagarjuna—Red Soil Grand Sight.
Sunrise next day at Damakan was marred by foggy morning weather. Later in the morning, we saw Qicai Slope (colorful slope), Jinxiuyuan, and Yuepuao—Luoshi Bay. It was a wonderful colorful experience.

We hired a driver and took a day trip from Kunming. The scenery is spectacular and depending on the season that you are visiting you will see different colours. However bear in mind that you are visiting a village so manage your expectations with regard to sanitary conditions. Bring along a hat and sunglasses as the UV rays are quite strong.

The visit to Dongchuan red land is the most memorable experience during my stay in Yunnan. The scenary is spectacular.

Tourists may expect a fee of around 1000 RMB for a 1-day private car hire, or 200 RMB for a local tour (non-English speaking) including group transport. The red land is accessible by bus, yet it is not advisable unless (a) you have sufficient time to walk around and explore the area or (b) you rent a car upon arrival of the red land.

Compared to Yuanyang terraces, the Red Land may be a more convenient destination since it is nearer to Kunming and a day trip is possible.

This natural Red and coloured soil developed in this area due to high iron and other mineral content and high acidity and presence of particular organic matters in the soil under the high temperature and rainy conditions. This area was kept secret to the outside world till 1990. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
I visited the place on 22nd Jun 2019 during our recent visit to Kunming. It takes about two and half hours by car from Kunming and there is not many option but to hire a car. Car for the full day travel shall charge around US$ 170. Please note, the area is remote and there is not much facilities there. It is advisable to carry your packed food and water. The landscape around is breathtaking. Miles and miles of land glowing in red, yellow, orange, green, purple and so many colours. Looks like a natural woven carpet or a canvas straight out of Van Gough paintings. Simply Amazing Natural Wonder. Worth visiting in one's lifetime. Keep umbrellas to protect from rain and strong sunshine very common in this area.

We especially chose to visit this place to see this natural beauty. And for that we had to accept difficulties of less developed tourism infrastructure of this area. However, on reaching the place we found the contrast of colours were not that much dramatic as shown in the photographs. The main reason, farmers grew less crop this year. Nevertheless, it was a scene to be seen and if I am not wrong, it is seen only here.

Travelled to Donghcuan from Kunming. The road all the way there was very bumpy, so get a good car. Our driver was very knowledgeable about the place and made sure we stop at the right locations to get some seriously good views of the red land and get pictures taken. The views are even better with the sun. The place isn't like any tourist spot in the sense that not many tourist come here.
