Huge watch tower looks like a huge pagoda. Most enchanting at night, completely iluminated, outstanding view. Situated at the edge of the moslem quarter and the old and crowded pedestrian street which worths itself a few hours stroll. Two minutes from the ancient muslim mosque.

Thank goodness these sites have not been destroyed. So evocative of ancient China. The streets around are fascinating too with their Muslim streets food.

It was a cold but sunny day. We had a brisk walk around the tower. Great views of the Old City and our guide MaYa provided great information about the history of the Tower Square.

Well worth the time and effort it's in the center of town and is simply beautiful at night. It cost about 10 USD to get in the Drums are impressive, to say the least, and the detail of the furniture is wonderful. You can easily get photos from all angles and are allowed to go up to the 3rd floor and walk around the balcony. Very worth the time.

Looked amazing all lit up at night. Unfortunately it was closed by the time we got there. Close to the Bell Tower and Muslim Street which is not to be missed.

If you have seen the Drum Tower in Beijin - no need to specially go there. If not - it worths the detour.

I traveled to Xian and stayed for three nights. Time was just right. Bus number 603 travels from the Sofitel and Grand Mercure hotels where I stayed. The bell tower is in the immediate center of the circle and Drum tower adjacent. The fee is nominal about 35 yuan . Once atop you see giant drums used in ceremonies. The upper level gives you a view of this metropolitan city. Great photo ops from here. The area is connected by underground passes . Afterwards I suggest going behind the building to a Hutong area that is lined with food vendors. Do not be afraid to try the various foods. In fact I did not see one tourist trying anything. Shameful if you are here for the real culture. Be mindful in what you select but try something. The real China is seen by watching the vendors interact with the people. I felt as if everyone was staring at me and they were because after talking with someone It was explained tourists do not go here. This area is full of rich local culture and yes most Chinese young are given English in school. The problem is they do not practice on tourists. So visit here and get the full experience .

If you are in Xi'an then it makes sense to go here and to the Drum Tower and the city wall. This is a very pretty tower in the center of the old city. Looks better at night than during the day. Its also very crowded so be prepared.

what exactly is the "Drum Tower" and Bell Tower? Is it necessary to have a guide for interpretation or is this a site one can do on your own? thanks for the reply.

The Drum Tower and the Bell Tower are large pagodas which are particularly spectacular at night. You can also visit the interiors which are sort of small museums. The Drum Tower has a drumming exhibitiion I think once a day (maybe twice). I don't think you'd need a guide, and they are quite close to each other. Also not a long walk from the city wall which is worth seeing. They are in the center of the old walled city area and are adjacent to the lively Muslim quarter. Definitely worth going to!
