If you are into seal carving, this is a must-visit street. There are many stones for sale that look like they can be used for seal carving, and you can find many already-carved ones in the souvenir shops. In the back area, there is a place where a group of neat people have gathered to set up stalls, and locals bring writing paper to have characters written on.
I also recommend this place to Japanese people who are interested in kanji and calligraphy!

It is a street where are plenty of restaurants, souvenir shops and street artists. We went there in the evening but it was kind of dead. Many restaurants (actually most of them) were closed, some souvenirs shops, too. And there were only a few street artists. I suppose this place is more alive during the day time.

We have been to Shu Yuan Men many times and have been enthralled by it each time. There is always a photograph to be taken, whether it be the architecture, the sellers, or the practitioners of calligraphy. It is based mainly on calligraphy but you need to explore the nooks and crannies to find other things of interest as well. Make sure you look up at the architecture.
Down the middle of the street are street vendors selling a multitude of touristy things. What is good is that they don't hassle you; you can shop and window shop at your leisure.
If you want to visit the Beilin Museum you have to go to the end of this street and turn right and follow the road around. It does have a sign at the beginning of the street but it is not very visible.
Overall it is a nice change from the modern side of Xi'an.

This is the only place I've seen in China where you can watch the people make the souveniers as you buy them. The artists are painting, making stamps (traditional Chinese things made from marble), practicing calligraphy, and so on. It's a much more peaceful walk, usually not very crowded, and the general ambiance is calm and open-minded. The artists don't shout at you to buy their wares (unlike Muslim Street). Prices are surprisingly fair (e.g. 30 yuan for stamps, 50 for some paintings). The stalls close early, around 6 pm, but stick around for some street bbq!

One can buy writing brush, ink, paper and ink stone here. There are other crafts, such as paper-cut and ceramics.

Near the South Gate and the Beilin/Steele Museum. Quiet area with many shops selling calligraphy materials, art, chops, flutes … It feels like a missed opportunity for the shops to vary what they sell; many of the shops are the same. After touring the Stone Steles Museum and watching them make a press of one stele, the shops could be selling much nicer versions of their own. Our entire trip we were looking for unique t-shirts, scarves … with creative art and beautiful characters for gifts/mementos.
Not a lot of English. Definitely go to the Stone Stele Museum and enjoy this street as you walk to it.

One of our best discoveries in Xian. Great art for sale and an area for gentle browsing. We bought paintings and antiques. Belgian Bar behind Back Packers Hotel good for a beer.

I don't know if the title 古代文化街 is well accepted, at least my guide book, which is very well sold doesn't mention it. The streets towards Beilin Museum are called 书院门 and 三学街 where many shops selling calligraphy goods such as brushes and cake inks. Even if you're not interested in calligraphy, still you can enjoy here for souvenir shoppings. Good entree before Beilin Museum to taste Chinese calligraphy arts and culture.

What time do shops close in Xian? Is it safe to walk around the city and on the wall in the evening?
Written 23 July 2017
The wall closes 6-7 P.m. During summer the South gate closes around 9 - 10 P.M. It is safe to walk around the tourist place in city and the wall.
