Wonderful shopping for lingerie of all types, mostly at wholesale prices or mostly discounted by at least 50% from regular retail.

Lots of goods at discounted prices in December. Latest fashions appear quickly in this market, and outgoing fashion goods are often discounted by 50% or more. Once again, I found great things to buy.

Great street to buy undergarments at 20% to 30% of the price you would pay at a regular retail store. Over the past ten years, I've noticed a continual improvement in the quality of the clothing bring offered, and no substantial increase in price. Only a few stores require that you purchase a larger quantity in order to get a wholesale price.

Started coming here every time. Buy lingerie, underwear, kids' swimsuits, leggings. Then at end of the alley you reach a main street with super cheap flip flops and kids' sneakers etc. And more alleys of just women's shoes of very high quality. Some only sell wholesale. Or dont let you try on before you buy. When you go back to gaodi jie its a 3 min walk to beijing road so can do it together.

This is perhaps one of the most popular wholesale shopping markets in Guangzhou. Tons of small shops selling all kinds of stuff. Its a great place to get some really cool clothing at fairly affordable pricing, though I cannot really guarantee how durable they would be. But it's surely worth visiting.

All types of undergarments are sold on this long market street. I come to this market on every Guangzhou visits, meaning multiple times each year. I’ve bought a few things on each trip, and often a full suitcase of goods. There are hundreds of small vendors, selling a range of goods from very basic quality to a few offering higher quality goods. During the run-up to Spring Festival, many were offering 25% to 50% discounts. A high percentage of the undergarments were being offered in red. There are two reasons for this. First, lovers frequently gift each other red underwear and socks, or red bra, panties and stockings/nylons during the Chinese Lunar New Year period. Second, it is considered to bring good fortune if those born in the year of the pig wear these red garments every day during the lunar year.

There is a local saying: “If you haven’t been to High Street, then you haven’t been to Guangzhou”.
I have been going to this market for the past ten years. It continues to get better and better. GaoDi Jie (aka High Street) is a wholesale/retail market for women’s lingerie, especially for bras and all types of undergarments and evening lingerie (including some sexy lingerie), men’s underwear, socks and other legwear, pyjamas, swimming suits, children’s clothing, belts, and various other clothing. There are also a few boutiques selling women’s hats and caps for men and women. Of the approximate 500 boutiques on High Street and offshooting allies, about 75% sell underwear, bras and other undergarments. Overall, it is about 95% womenswear and 5% menswear. It is basically a long, winding pedestrian street, about 600 metres in length, with hundreds of individual boutiques. Most sell Walmart quality undergarments, with about 10% to 15% selling somewhat upmarket goods.

High Street as it is known to many locals, is an historic commercial trading market which has existed for over 100 years and long before the 1948 formation of people’s Republic of China. In October 1980, it was approved as Guangzhou’s first industrial goods market offering mainly clothing, shoes and hats. Today, the shoe wholesalers have moved a block closer to OneLink Plaza, and the hat wholesalers are dispersed, or at least I haven’t yet discovered the hat wholesale market area.

About 75% of the time, you can get the vendors to lower the price from their initial starting point. In general, I pay about 10% to 25% of the price I would normally pay in North America. I have found overall quality to be very good, and improving over the years. About 5% of the boutiques sell fairly high end goods, basically of the style and quality one would expect at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. For the higher quality items, the discount tends to be less, with me generally paying about 25% of North American retail. An added benefit is that there isn’t any sales tax, thus increasing the aggregate saving to something closer to 80%.

Lately I have been coming to Guangzhou about four times a year. Over the past ten years, I’ve visited the GaoDi Jie market on each trip and have always found something of interest to buy.

I get to GaoDi Jie by walking down Beijing Lu (The Beijing Road pedestrian street and walking about another 100 metres and it will be on your left. On most of my High Street shopping days, I will turn left after I get to the other end of the street. Then I walk about 250 metres to Haizhu Square. Then I either turn left to go to Taikang Jewelry City (the jewelry wholesale market) or right to go to OneLink Plaza. Alternatively, once you get to the end of High Street and cross the road instead of turning left, you will enter the shoe wholesale market.

Be careful walking down the street. There are many overloaded homemade, tricycle-trucks and other delivery vehicles going down the street. Fortunately, they tend to use their horn as they approach pedestrians. Some of them move at a fairly fast clip.

Enjoy your shopping. Guangzhou certainly is my favourite place to shop.

I think the only reason that there are not a lot of TripAdvisor reviews on this marketplace is that name under which it comes up. Most foreigners would probably be seeking it under “Underwear Wholesale Market”, not “GaoDi Jie”. I found it by sending two local friends a photo of the street name. One said it was “Gao Di Jie” and the other “High Street”.

I grew up there, and I have witnessed the dramatic changes of the Chinese economy in this street. I strongly recommend to visit the old building or purchase goods there because you can see the real Chinese traditional wholesale market or get really good deals for goodies there. GaoDi Jie was the first wholesale market in southern China as known, which mostly owned by individuals. I love this place! I'm strongly interested in buying the properties in GaoDi Jie if I have a chance lol~ If you would like to know more about it, I'm more than happy to help :) Please contact me by email: 6jiawen@gmail.com Sincerely !
