Why SWMBO and I had never visited this park remains a great mystery, it’s not far away or difficult to get to but the fact remained that we’d never visited it until a couple of days ago.

We packed our bags, to be more truthful SWMBO packs one with all the essentials for these sultry days including umbrellas, t-shirts and flip-flops. Of course, snacks are included usually cheese and biscuits for me, tea for her good self, and Hami melon for both of us. I just carry my man-bag with phone and reading glasses, making sure there are sufficient cat biscuits and fish food for all eventualities.

We strolled across the road and waited a few minutes for a No. 190 bus. Masked and brandishing mobile phones showing our ‘green to go’ Suikang codes we boarded the bus, swiped our travel cards which were lightened by ¥2, and settled down for the ride to XiaoBei station. We descended into the bowls of the station, passed the temperature check and baggage security scans, and then down even further to platform 1 for the Line 5 train going westwards the seven stops to Liede station.

We emerged from Liede using exit C then we were in a quandary as there were no signs to the park, however SWMBO asked a very nice lady who waved her hand and indicted we turn left from the exit and walk straight on along Huacheng Avenue. Would you believe it she was also going to Zhujiang park!

At the first junction we went straight across and I spotted Liede Bridge (TA reviewed), after another 100 metres or so, we turned left and walked alongside the canal for about 200 metres and then crossed a bridge and amazingly we were at the XingSheng Gate entrance to the park. While this foreigner and his wife had to show SuiKang codes and have temperatures taken our good Samaritan just strolled in and disappeared into the park. Obviously, she was a regular.

We looked at the map of the park and decided that the path meandering around the park looked good, so that’s what started to do. However, the best laid plans etc., because 5 minutes later the heavens opened, and it poured down for 30 minutes. Luckily there are a few places to shelter and sitting there was an opportunity to enjoy the snacks from SWMO’s bag.

After the rain which ‘freshened’ the park we continued our stroll, past the maze, paradise, the children’s playground, the elders (that’s me) area, past the north gate, then the east gate. There are no steps on the main path and it’s an easy walk. However, there are steps when you get off the beaten track.

Further on a sign to ‘The Lake’ was irresistible and so we turned right and enjoyed the lake and its fountains. The through the Magnolia Gardens and onto the Cultural Area, no culture today but there’s a very nice stage. On and on we strolled sometimes heading towards the XingSheng Gate. After a couple of hours or so, we arrived at where we entered the park.

There are lots of tall trees which keeps the paths in the shade. There’s a jogging track around the park which was being well used by locals. Toilets seemed to be every hundred metres and were very clean. There are also kiosks for drinks and snacks.

Talking of snacks, I suggest you take a couple of packets of cat biscuits because there are a few friendly cats who appreciate a snack.

Altogether an enjoyable afternoon, and we’ll certainly return to this park and climb some of the steps to see what hidden gems are there.

During my business stay in Guangzhou there is a real need for taking yourself away from the hustle and polluted air.

Zhujiang Park was exactly what I needed to relax and refocus.

It is a must visit for those seeking a walk, running, family time, meditation !!!!

We had a refreshing walk through this densily treed park. Thankfully, it was coller under the trees which provide shade for likely 75% of the park's walkways. There are many gardens, a lake, and other sections to the park.

This is a gigantic, exceptionally well maintained park with a variety of paths to explore. It has beautiful ponds, garden and historic buildings and a variety of locals doing all kinds of group activities from Tai-chi to martial arts (including using swords) to hip hop/modern dance. We even joined in one of the groups of women doing traditional dance and were welcomed. Plenty of joggers and people walking and taking a chat. They have snack vendors and well maintained restrooms. There are play areas for small children with fun equipment and a rock path where you can remove your shoes. I highly recommend taking a stroll to see the beautiful plants, people and scenery.

This 22-hectare park is great place to temporarily get away from big city life. It is a very well-maintained garden-park. There are many gardeners busy working throughout the park. In the Ornamental Forest Zone, there is a nice flowing waterfalls, and about 200 metres away, an odd shaped lake. There are many benches scattered throughout the park. Sit and enjoy the oxygen rich fresh air, the sounds of the forest, and relax amid the lush greenery. This multi-section park has at least three sets of very clean, large washrooms.

It is a beautiful and quiet park. Not very crowded. And it has an awesome playground for kids located on the north side, kind of near the northwest corner of the park. Great for kids.
