This museum, situated down the road from Sennaya Ploshchad, is packed with model trains, posters, information and small exhibits. What it doesn't have are full-sized locomotives. The building is not large enough to accommodate any. While the models and pictures are interesting to look at, (and the Soviet trains in the Second World War exhibition are particularly fascinating), unless you... More

That was one of my favorite museums or even the most beloved! That has few floors of all-size train and railroad models. It even has a full-sized part of passenger train from the beginning of 20th century! Get there with kids and they will get truly excited about it!

I wouldn't travel specially to this museum unless you are a real train enthusiast. The museum is housed in a nice old building. There are tours of the museum, however they are only in Russian. There is also no English translations on any of the descriptions of the exhibits. There are many models of trains and bridges and other railway... More

I enjoyed the model trains, but I needed my wife to translate all the information on the trains. This attracted other visitors from other countried. My wife stopped after a while for it was becoming a tour. Plus the ladies from the museum said something to my wife. The staff didn;t seem friendly and I think some people who know Soviet/Russian... This is normally the type of place I would love, scale models of trains and bridges. The museum was a let down, it was relatively expensive, quite small and had no information available in English. There was one section closed because they were working on it, we spent less than an hour looking around and then moved on to the... More

We tried to visit the railway museum today (July 18, 2013), and it was closed for significant renovations. We could not find a warning of this anywhere online, so wanted to post this news for anyone considering visiting.

We checked this museum out as my Father worked on the steam trains when he was a young man, and there was such a lot of interesting information here, some great exhibits too. A two (to three) hours is enough to see it all.

Obviously the railway museum is going to be of slightly specialist interest ("normals" shouldn't miss out on the Hermitage in favour of visiting the railway museum!), but for people with any kind of interest in railways the museum is well worth a visit. Labelling is in Russian, but there is very interesting collection of engineering and technical models, some of... More
