The museum's neoclassic architecture is spectacular. And, for me, as a dilettante of modern Russian art, the highlight was the contemporary and modern art in the Benois wing. There are QR codes you can scan throughout the museum but not in this section of the museum. Perfect for a rainy afternoon.

For Rublev and Malevich !! Interesting place. Great collection of Malewicz and Rublow .. But ..... the staff must learn a lot! There is no place to sit when you're finished exploring, narrow passage in the locker room, toilets only on one side ... No wifi, complete mess - poor organization.

The Hermitage is superb, of course, but it contains mostly Western European art. Almost all the Russian art is here at the Russian Museum. Here you’ll see stuff you are less likely to see elsewhere.

The Russian State Museum sits overlooking the shady Mikhaylovskiy Square and is relatively quiet inside too, with less tourists than the Hermitage, so you can have more time to wander without feeling that you are being pressured to move on. Well worth a visit if you have a lot of time in the city.

I knew zero about Russian Art except that Icons were a major feature before I went in. Our guide showed the development as we walked through the chronologically arranged collection. Until Peter the Great it was pre-Renaissance, without perspective and heavily stylised. The abrupt change at Peter's direction was fully visible as the European's came to St Petersburg or the... Interesting to see where art & ceramics were before & after 1917. Artists not as familiar as those in the Hermitage or the impressionist exhibition

For any lover of art, this is a must. From early icons to modern day Russian artists. It makes you realise that while European artists are lauded at exhibitions in "the West", Russia has an equal number of artists who are not recognised beyond Russia - and they should be.

Less overwhelming than Hermitage, but still pretty big. Provides chronological overview of the Russian art, from early icons to Soviet socialist realism. Not everything is super exciting, but the newer art is worth your attention. The 3-days ticket that allows you to see all branches is worth it only if you are interested in interiors of grand palaces – the... More

They have a vast collection of best Russian paintings. However, this time I was disapointed as they just had closed an exhibition of Aivazovsky and taken all his paintings to storage.

They have 109 rooms to visit. Some of them are temporary exhibition, so actually around 80 rooms were available to visit today. There were some special halls too which was additional gift. Anyway, I could not find Kandinsky's works but still got nice arts there. I spent 2 hours for 17 rooms, then started to speed up to finish them... More
