We had a wonderful private guided tour around the Hermitage which avoided the awful large, shepherded groups. 20,000 people a day visit the Hermitage so if you don't like crowds, pick your time to visit (i.e. early or late!) There is so much to see...More

Of course, the Hermitage and Winter Palace are amazing! We had an excellent tour guide who kept us engaged and "moving" which is required for such a large museum. Fabulous even if for a short time.

It is an amazing place but it is overwhelming. We had a guided tour as part of our Russia tour. It was about two and a half hours, even so we only did the highlights. Part of the tour was about the Hermitage building itself,...More

One of the greatest museums on the planet and a must visit. It gets very crowded however. But no stay in St Petersburg can take place without visiting the Hermitage. There is a lot to see and just the major highlights will take about two...More

The Hermitage Museum is an enormous place, and is worth every minute spent there. There is so much ground to cover, ranging from the history of the building itself to the sheer volume of artwork on display. It's best to go in with a plan,...More

A must visit in St Petersburg as this is the main collection of arts and treasures. The building is interesting and impressive. Don't miss.

Never go to the Hermitage on the pick of the tourist season. We've been swimming against non ending crowd of chineeese tourist. You think more about navigation through the museum than about the content of what you look at

Unfortunately, we were on and excursion from our cruise. Even with a half day and very knowledgeable and patient guide we only hit the highlights. One needs days to do the Hermitage justice.

This place is VAST. In one day you have to pick out just a small sample of the displays and the displays are a small part of the collection. Spend more days if possible. The collection looks well cared for and is well displayed with...More

What is the difference between Main Museum and the Winter Palace? If I buy tickets only for the Winter Palace is it enough for one day?

The winter palace is part of the Hermitage. There are several buildings all interconnected that make up the Hermitage. It's huge so you could easily spend hours here. Not sure what you mean by the main museum unless you are... More

I was just there in May. While I had a visa, I don't believe you would need one to enter the Hermitage so long as you can enter Russia without one. I base this on the fact that when buying my ticket online they didn't ask... More
