The Millennium of Russia Monument was erected in 1862 to commemorate Veliky Novgorod's 1,000th anniversary. It has been cast from over 60 tonnes of bronze and resembles a bell with sculptures of famous Russian figures from bygone years. I visited with a tour guide who gave a fascinating description of many of the sculptures and the role those people played... More

Old Novgorod is most interesting with its Kremlin and, across the river, the old merchant quarter. You will need to stay overnight if travelling from St P because of the distance.

Looks just like a monument, but it is interesting to hear the story around it. Established for the 1000ths birthday of Russia. On weekends once per day free of charge guided tour.

A grotesque entity, but every nation has its monuments in bad taste. If you enjoy this monstrosity, then you will probably also enjoy the horrendous monuments to Queen Victoria's reign in prominent places in London.

Given to the people of Norgorov as a gift from the Russian President on their millennium birthday after being founded in 864, this sculpture depicts famous Russian rulers, musicians and artists and a great image of the world.

I did not realize the strong ties Russia had with the Byzantine empire. Western historians claim it is dead and does not exist. Visiting the The Monument to the Millennium of Russia, proved that Byzantium is alive and well. The Monument was built in 1862 to commemorate 1,000 years of Russian history. I was impressed with the large Byzantine crosses... More

The monument is from 1862, and is dedicated to the great man of Russia until then (but not all of them). You will like this is you have a native guide or a good guidebook.
