Of course this was on the list, and deserves to be. A broad range of art you won't see elsewhere, with many revelations on Russian artists. Yes, they had room-specific English crib sheets, but No they weren't available for every room (stolen, I guess) and the guards were not helpful on this front. Do not miss the icons -- a... More

All of the amazing Russian classics are here. We had a group of 6 and hired a guide, which definitely added to the experience.

Not being well educated in Russian art, the gallery offered me comprehensive introduction of history of Russian painting from the very begins until the end of 19th century. You can easily got lost in number of portraits so you can look for some highlight like portraits of Pushking and Gogol. The gallery is well organized, you almost do not notice... More

If you are interested in Russian Art, that is the place to visit. It has the best collection of Russian Art in Moscow . The mainstream of Russian Art started its delelopment comparatively late , in 1700s..( Russian Icons , are a separate story and more looked at as pieces of veneration.. then as pieces of Art) In that museum,... Unless you know the history of many of the items exhibited it can be quite overwhelming/underwhelming at the same time. You can hire audio guides but you would be stuck for hours listening to each. I recommend googling the main pieces you want to see and target those or you will be walking round the gallery forever.

Staying in Zamoskvorechye

Neighbourhood Profile
Zamoskvorechye
It wouldn’t be a mistake to call Pyatnitskaya street the main axis of this neighborhood – turn one direction and you’ll find the Tretyakov Gallery in Lavrushinsky Lane, turn another – a hip Scandinavian restaurant. Old churches now embrace contemporary life with style and grace. Going to Zamoskvorechye is like visiting during the times when it was a medieval Russian quarter, but with a modern twist of 20th century buildings pushing themselves into the 21st century with new businesses opening weekly. Stroll down Pyatnitskaya to taste dozens of global cuisines – from Ukrainian and Georgian to Thai and American.
