Absolutely amazing. Seriously, no words. My suggestion is to go there as soon as possible. It opens at 10 AM. They give you free scarves in order to enter the monastery.

One of the most beautiful and well preserved and restored old Russian churches. The place is not big so 1-2 hrs will be enough for a visit. Make sure to use a local guide - they have some good stories about this place.

Kostroma is my most northerly point on the Golden Ring. It's a nice town on the banks of Kostroma and Volga rivers. The Volga here is so blue and peaceful. Monastery of St Ipaty is a walled complex sitting beautifully on the river bank. Very beautiful inside the complex. There's also a small museum which shouldn't be missed.

We enjoyed touring this large monastery with its beautiful church and associated museums. 20 min walk from city center across the bridge over the Kostroma River. Also on bus route 14. Skirts provided for women who need them.

It is interesting but this Monastry is much more beautiful from a distance (namely from another cost of Volga river. Similar Monastry in Sergiev Posad or in Seliger region is more interesting. Museums in this Monastry is more about Romanov's dynasty then about Russian Orthodocs Chorch.

At the entrance you are asked to buy tickets. If you don't want to visit museums, ignore itand go in. They will probably say that tickets are obligatory and you won't get anywhere, but it is not true. You can visit the monastery and its territory free of charge. The monastery itself is nothing special, an average Russian church.

You can ignore tickets at entry. Just explain that you don't want to visit museum. Museum demonstrates 3 examples of pechka and 2 arm-chairs. So no worth to visit at all. All other objects are free for visiting, well, average Russian rich monastery.

The staff at the monastery are very helpful and enthusiastic about sharing information about the monastery with you. It's very peaceful and beautiful set on the Volga river. The central cathedral has beautiful frescoes.

Lovely monastery with an interesting museum collection and beautiful views of the river and from the river. The best pictures can be taken at the winter from the frozen river. All of the usual rules for visiting orthodox monastery apply: if you're a woman, make sure to have a head cover and wear skirt below your knees. Some wrap skirts... More

A beautiful monastery by the riverside. It also has a nice museum with a big collection of artefacts regarding orthodox christianity. A must visit if passing this town and should be followed up with a meal on one of the floating restaurants on the Volga river.
