This unique shrine marks the place of the great explorer Magellan's demise. Like Captain Cook in Hawaii a few centuries later, Magellan was killed by the natives over a petty religious dispute. A statue of Chief Lapu-Lapu is there. Nearby is a Catholic Chapel in the shape of a conquistador helmet. The Mactan Shrine should be of interest to anyone who likes history.

There's not much to be seen but the statue of Lapu Lapu and the Magellan shrine, the historical site of the battle between the two important figures of Philippine history. It's a strolling park cum garden complete with souvenir shops nearby. I supposed, it is the cheapest in CEBU for souvenirs. The mangrove nearby if developed better will be an added feature that will further boost tourism i assumed. There are also SUTUKIL restos around to choose from if you want to feast on seafoods but the price is high and the ambience is very ordinary. This place is accessible and easy to reach, just a multicab ride.

Nice monument to the explorer and nice local market with souvenirs and hand-made gifts. Local food and photo opportunities.

I have been here for four years now and I must say that the Mactan Shrine is a nice attraction and should be visited but do yourself a favor and DO Not eat at the restaurants there. I had lunch there with a friend two weeks ago at a place called Sutukil Resto. No prices posted on their outside menu. That shoud have have been a clue. I ordered grill Lapu Lapu, my friend ordered calamari, we shared an order of chop suey and both had one order of regular rice and soft drinks. The total? I was expecting around 700p... After eating we asked the bill.... 1800p.... hahaha a 1 Star resto charging 5 star resto prices. Honestly, I have eaten cheaper at Marco Polo!! A complete tourist trap and should be avoided like the plague. The place had no airconditioning, plenty of nasty flies and horrible smells from the ocean. So, come enjoy the Shrine but leave your appetite and your wallet at home!

Visited in March of 2009. I’d say it’s maybe 20 minutes from the Cebu Airport. No entry fees. Lots of photo opportunity here, nothing really interesting to do. Snap a few photos, see what the vendors are selling and move on ….

Magellan Shrine is indeed an historic site to visit in Cebu City. It will recall your history during the elementary days. I believe every Filipino should visit this shrine since he has done an heroic act and deed for The Filipinos. We went there at around 6:00 p.m. good enough to see those added lightings in the area. A good pictorial site too!

This place is a short walk from the Hilton and Shangri La and makes a pleasant day time or evening stroll. There are historical markers explaining Magellan's death and nicely tended grounds. There are also souvenir stores where if you bargain well you can pick up some momentos of your trip at a good price. Finally, be sure to check out the pier at the back of the shrine. We watched an evening thunderstorm sitting there over the water and really enjoyed it.

Been here many times, thought it was time to leave a review. Located in Mactan this is a great place to stop and experience some of the Filipino Culture. Very easy place to stop, no charge to enter. It does have a donation box at the entrance, in which I always try to put a little something. Location is very assessable and lots of parking. Up keep in surprising very nice. Clean nice layout, concrete walks and ocean walkway. I would say that they is not a lot of detailed information on the signage. So if you could have a local with you to explain more in detail of the story behind Magellan it would be more interesting. Not a lot to do, but great scenery and Good Pic opportunity's. Located on one side is shell crafts, souvenirs, T- Shirts and so on.. Decent Price and quality is very good. Also across the parking lot is the seafood places called Stukil. Watch out for the overcharging and cooking charges that you will not be told about.. All in all great stop while in Mactan. Nice, relaxing, and can see a lot of what the Philippines has to offer and the arts and crafts. The site really holds a great importance to the history of The Philippines that is not realized.

This monument is just next to LapuLapu Statue. It is a memory to the fight of the hero LapuLapu, the leader of the locals and Magelan who want to convince the locals to follow the religion of the Spanish emperators. The monument id poor mainained and the local hero is perfect. The park around is nice and a lot of good fish restaurants
