One of the best museums we've ever been to. There are numerous artifacts and concise historical accounts. The timeline and information are quite well organized. Being there and getting a glimpse of Cebu's past feels really pleasant.

I just arrived in Cebu city 2 days ago (it's Jan 31st, 2014 today). Just letting other travelers know I tried to go see this museum yesterday but it is temporarily closed due to the earthquake that happened on Oct 15, 2013. Don't know when it will reopen.

This is truly a treat for history lovers! It’s the heart of Philippines! No cameras are allowed inside but walking through this museum is just like taking a walk through the history! Upon finding out that this museum was a jail years back, I became more curious and interested! It has various sections of different eras with galleries containing historical mementos from government and private source. There are very friendly guides with whom I had no problem in communicating and they gave me the tour of the whole museum in a total of two hours, but I enjoyed every second of it!

I felt in touch with the past. The pre colonial exhibits were interesting but I was interested in the 1880s up till present. The fight for independence was beset with intrigue. I studied a bit of this period so I felt involved seeing some of the displays, newspapers and personal papers of the heroes. The Japanese occupation and post WW 2 elections. The Museo Sugbo is for tourists, history buffs, students and all citizens of Cebu to learn about the glorious history of this island. The small entrance fee is well worth it.

Knowing Cebu's rich culture and history was indeed a great experience for me, my husband and my kids. It is a place worth visiting especially when you have kids and you want to show them interesting artifacts. During our visit they provided as a tour guide which was great since you can gather more information than just by merely reading those small caption they provided beside each artifact.

I love museums. Ive been so many and compared to the other provincial museums, Museo Sugbo is bigger. For those interested to learn about the history of Cebu-Philippines, it will take more than an hour to really go around this place.

I'd say this museum is a "must see!" if you're in the city of Cebu. It's in a large building that was once the provincial prison and is on Cuenco Street near the SM Mall. And since it's so large it also has many different kinds of exhibits in various rooms. No guide is needed since it's designed to be a self-guided tour where one can go as fast or as slowly as one wishes (I enjoyed all the two hours of my visit!). There are exhibits of pre-Spanish era history with ceramics that arrived from Vietnamese, Chinese, and Arab traders. This city was apparently quite a trading center even hundreds of years ago. I learned that's the reason Magellan came to this city. When he made his first stop on Limasawa Island and asked the local chieftain "Hey fella! Where's the biggest trading center in the area?" he was told about Sugbu. That's the old native name for Cebu and the reason for the museum's name. So that's why Magellan showed up here; it was to get in on the trade going on. But the museum has much more than old stuff. There are displays of WWII weapons, uniforms, and flags. Also stacks and stacks of money issued during the Japanese occupation. Another room displays artifacts from the San Diego, a Spanish trading ship that was sunk long ago and recently found again. If you enjoy history, then you'll love this museum. I'm sure your kids will love it too!

This museum is a treasure trove. I didn't know what to expect but there were many different exhibits, so much that I was not able to see all in the same visit. Unfortunately the next time I went it was closed due to the earthquake of October 2013.

Hi this museum shows on google as permanently closed, and thee location on the tripadvisor map is different to the one on my printed city map. Can anyone confirm please whether the Museo Sugbo is still open, and if so is it at the junction of MJ Cuenco and R.Mercado or is it somewhere else? Many thanks. Alastair
