I would have given this a ZERO if possible. My husband and I have been big fans of our nation's National Park System for many years. Whenever we travel we try to go to at least one NPS location (park, landmark, historic site). Today, we decided to go the the Harriet Tubman Home ... What a farce!! I had checked on - line through the National Park Service to get some history. I then went to another search result and visited the Harriet Tubman Home website. That site indicated that tours were available, but we would be allowed "access to the grounds" without being part of a tour. We thought it would be like the Booker T. Washington site in VA where we were free to walk through the property, read, and educate ourselves. Well, this was NOT the case at the Harriet Tubman Home. When we arrived, the visitor center was closed. The home was locked. A NPS employee was mowing the grounds. After I took a picture of the BEAUTIFUL statue and read the plaques, I asked the NPS employee about the buildings. Although I read that this location is part of the NPS, and the grounds keeper was an NPS employee, he informed us that this is privately owned. Nothing was open. Our trip was pointless. (Although, it was clearly posted that we could drive to another location and get our NPS stamp ... Yes, the statue was wonderful, but ... I know there was more information about this courageous woman to be shared. I commented that this was confusing. He said: "Well, if you went to the NPS site, it would have taken you to the Harriet Tubman Home site". I told him it hadn't - and in fact, I double-checked when I got home. It did not link to the second site. I

This is one of the best museum values I have experienced. We watched a PBS show about Harriet Tubman just before we went and this tour brought the show to life and gave greater details and context about her life, slavery and a good deal about after the war. The director of the museum, Paul, gave us our tour. He was funny, entertaining and knew so many details. If you are in the area and want an accurate history lesson, I highly recommend.

Unfortunately, the home has been undergoing renovations since the summer of 2019 and still not open to the public. The state of New York and National Park Service needs to make this site a priority. In 1859, Harriet purchased the land form Governor Seward and made this her home for the rest of her life. We would have loved to have seen the inside of her home. The museum and visitor's center is located behind the her home and the home for the aged. Ample parking and room for RVs. Hope to return one day once her home is open.

Our family loved hearing the story of Harriet Tubman from Reverend Carter. She’s one of the most inspiring figures in history and he has been sharing her story for 33 years. He raised the money and has been doing much of the work to restore her home. The National Park Service isn’t finding it so please donate! This is well worth your time.

The state of New York needs to step up at the plate and cough up some $$$$ to rehab this site.
Part of the national park system yet counting on state money to rehab.
Tours available- refer to website

We did the tour which included a very engaging presentation that was about an hour long and a look at the houses. We were able to walk through the home Tubman used to house the elderly and look in the windows of the Tubman house. The house is being renovated/restored so it is not open to the public right now. I highly recommend attending the tour as a pose to the self-guided option. It was informative and interesting.

We were there on a Tues for the 10 AM amazing, wonderful presentation by Rev. Paul. He is a great story- teller. The sign says tours are given at 10 & 2, but they are more than tours, they are dramatic presentations, followed by a house tour. My understanding is that this site is in the (long, involved) process of becoming part of the National Park service, but is still privately owned by the AME Zion church, or their affiliated non-profit, hence the shorter hours and occasional closures. However, it is WELL worth the time and effort to visit!!

This is important history that needs to be shown. It's definitely a work in progress, as Tubman's actual house is closed (being renovated), and the only other historical building to tour (her Home for the Aged) takes about 5 minutes to walk through. The presentation at the Visitor Center is great - tour guide is HIGH ENERGY and very interesting! - but it's almost an hour and a little long for kids. I know the site is working in tandem with the NPS to improve the Tubman sites in Auburn. Yay! I look forward to coming back sometime down the road.

Even though the house isn't accessible right now, it was a really worthwhile and well done tour. Our tour guide, Paul was excellent! He shared a lot of facts and interesting info on Harriet and her life. He has quite a stage presence and really engages the listener. The tour started with a talk in the Visitor Center, and then we walked around the property and learned even more.

I have been here a few times as I live in Auburn. I visited this time with out-of-town guests who were in town for the first time. Rev. Carter does an amazing job of sharing the story and history of Harriet Tubman. Tours are by reservation. Call and schedule in advance. Tour times and days are limited so plan ahead. There is a small fee. But donation boxes are on site if you want to give more.
The museum, where the tour starts is very interesting alone with artifacts recovered from the grounds and poster displays of the life and times of Ms. Tubman Davis.
The tour includes a walk through the only other opened building, the Home for the Aged. It is furnished with donated period pieces. Only the first floor is open.
The Davis home is still under renovations.
Parking is on the lot in front of the museum. Come hear about the life and times of one of the most famous free black women in history.

Even though the museum is closed during covid19 can I still visit the grounds?

You can park along the roadside and walk up to her brick house and commune with her there. You can also walk up to the “home for the aged” building where I believe she moved when she became too frail to care for herself—my understanding is that she died in that “home for the aged,” which she founded. Also highly recommend visiting the gravesite when you’re in the area.

I don’t remember exactly (and they may vary by season), so I recommend searching on nps.gov (National Park Service) for that info. Enjoy!

Not normally open on a Monday but they may well be open on Memorial Day, def call or email. Remember to arrive about 10 minutes before the hour to get the guided tour.

I called and left a message with them. I will ask if there is a date for the reopening of the house which I understand is undergoing restoration now that the property is on the national park registry.
