Plaza de Armas de Trujillo is the main square where the Spaniards founded the city in 1534 and where Trujillo became independent on the 29th of December in 1820. Many colorful buildings surround the square including the yellow Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary and the Monument of Liberty. The monument has three sections. The first section has a circular platform with pedestals resting on a base. This serves as a support for the large sculptures representing art, science, trade, and health. The second section has three large statues: one of a man bent symbolizing slavery. Another shows a man with his arms back signifying the fight for freedom. In the third statues the man’s hands are raised indicating freedom. At the top, a statue of a women holding a torch reminiscent of the United States’ Statue of Liberty.

Nice plaza. Fun people watching. Visit the tourism police on the south end of the square (under the green balcony). They will give you maps of nearby attractions and an explanation. Cathedral is nice as is the museum where reserve bank is. Both are free. Museum has restrooms and you can see bed Simon Bolívar slept in when he visited this former mansion (casona) and helped to plan the revolution for Peru’s independence right here in Trujillo.

This is one of the most gorgeous main squares in Peru. Well preserved and clean. Everything is just a few block from here.

The plaza de Armas is really a nice square in the center of Trujillo, it has the cathedral, the government and some other houses that are well kept. Nice to walk around and take some pictures.

It was great! Very recommended local food, is safe with many historical buildings. The balconies are a must watch! At night the plaza changes it’s colors!

Scammers operate in Trujillo. I was approached by two local individuals attempting to make friends, take you for a drink then devise a story about not having any US currency and try to get you to take it out an ATM whilst they pay you in local Pesos - in fake currency. Avoid this city like the plague- scumbags

Since 1534 when killer conquistador Pizarro founded the city, this square has been the main plaza of Trujillo. It is well laid out and well maintained. Some trees provide shade and there are benches to sit. Most remarkable I found the statue of a naked man, symbolizing freedom (see the torch he is holding). At his feet are other sculptures in social realist style representing the arts and labor.

Wished there would have been more shade, as during the day the place is bloody hot.

A nice plaza with European stile and beautiful gardens. Well visited by locals. The colored buildings that surround it make the area pretty pictoresque.

Sunny Saturday off the cruise ship. Great place to people watch. Plenty of benches. Listen to the cacophony of car horns. McDonald’s has WiFi for a minimum purchase.
