We saw a lot of Condor when we went. However, you have to be patient and it has to be somewhat warm for them to come out. The canyon has many picture moments while you wait for the Condors at several lookout points. I highly recommend this excursion.

The steps are worth it for the great view of Lake Titicaca, and it only takes around 20-30 minutes to get here from the town. If you are in Puno and do not bother to go up, you are the one missing out!

Nice little hike with a beautiful view of the city and the lake. Take water and your time. Elevation will definitely be felt.

The hike up the stairs (roughly 600) would be easy if it was on a low elevation town.
However at >3800 ASL, it is a bit of a challenge.
Just be sure to have a day of rest when you get to Puno or take it really slow on the way up.
The reward once you reach the top will be worth the effort.
Alternatively, I do believe that there are taxis that will drive you all the way up.

Not for the feint hearted. A lot of steps [660] though with much needed rest points along the way. The high altitude did not help either. Views from the top were great however going up into the tower at the top was an experience not to be repeated as it had been used as a urinal and the stench was overpowering.

The view from the top was spectacular! My friend and I decided to take a taxi to the base of the stairs and walk back later It was well worth the climb up the stairs to see the view from the top and to view the condor. You can even climb up into the tower that holds the condor !

A "big beautiful" statue of a condor (with its wings spread as if the big bird is about to take flight into the air) is what awaits at this viewpoint which also offers "a panorama" of the city down below (the view that pretty much encompasses the entire city) & Lake Titicaca to the east beyond the city (although from here it's only just a fractional view of the lake for which my suggestion is an "all-day tour" to see the "great expanse" of the lake).

I came up by taxi which was about a 10-minute ride from the "main square" Plaza de Armas then stayed at the site for about 15 minutes (which was enough including the time to go into the base of the statue & go up the little stairway to the balcony above which is as close as you can get to the statue) before taking the taxi back down to the Square, all for the cost of "about 20 soles" which I would totally suggest since there are a number of turns on the way (not a straightforward way from the Square and no direct stairway that I could see) where I also saw some "fiercely-barking" dogs from the taxi at some part of the way.

There's also another viewpoint with a puma statue which is in the north of the city and which I guess offers a different vantage point for the city below (different from this one which is in the west of the city), but I wasn't at the time willing to spend like another 20 soles for that one.

So ten minute steepish walk from plaza to base of stairs, two seats of stairs intersected by a dirt road take 15-30minutes depending on your fitness. Nice view and the condor was cool. Approached by two wild dogs on the way down and really felt like they were that close to attacking; baring teeth, lunging at legs. At 4:30pm you are isolated on the stairs, not many around at all, I felt very weary that we could easily be targets and maybe if I had read others reviews further back I may not have done this!

I visited 29/07/2018 in the late afternoon...great views over puno..

I don't think there are any safety problems here because there was a police truck parked at the top , behind the chicken statue

The neighbourhood is dirty and squalid with a few barking dogs that might attack but I don't think it's dangerous...bring a walking stick just in case.
