We went to Lake Umayo as part of the trip to Sillustani but you will need to climb up past Sillustani to see the lake. From what I could see, this lake is higher than Lake Titicaca and we could all see a boat navigating its way round the lake so possible this is the highest navigable lake in the world. Even if it is not the highest navigable lake in the world the mountains round it give it a charm of its own. After the climb up here with the altitude making things even more difficult it was an absolute pleasure to sit down and admire this wonderful lake.

Our view of Lake Umayo was from the peninsula that was home to the funeral towers of Sillustani. Peaceful and beautiful.

The Family enjoyed visiting this site off the beaten path. Bathrooms were less than could be desired so "go" before you Go. Very cool pathway leading up to ruins but it was a bit steep for some of the travelers around but they did have benches and street vendors selling their goods on the way up, so plenty of opportunity to stop and rest.

We went to Sillustani and at the top we were suprised by the lakes behind. Absolutely beautiful.Sillustani is worth a trip in the morning as it is quieter. Take time to sit and ponder and bottle the views.

Having slogged up yet another hill in the thin air, the view was wonderful, and totally unexpected.
Watching a man herding animals at the base of the cliff made it so real.

The best vantage point to view Lake Umayo is from the top of the Sillustani Tombs site. The lake is a beautiful blue lake. There is an island in the lake that has a wonderful mesa on the top of it, so the island is unique in its appearance. It is amazing to see such a large lake in an area that is relatively barren.

The water on Lake Umayo was very calm, flat, and peaceful looking the afternoon we visited Sillustani where the ancient tomb towers are located. Once at the top, we could see the lake all around and it was beautiful. There were a couple of small boats on the water but other than that, as far as the eye could see just water and some small islands.

The burial towers here are a marvel of antique buildings. The overall setting enjoys stunning scenery. Learning of the agriculture in the area added to the appeal of our visit.

This is a massive lake outside Puno (for us - on the way to Juliaca airport). Whilst it's not as big as Lake Titicaca, it's pretty big and quite pretty from the vantage point of the funeral towers at Sillustani.
Worth a visit to see the lake and the funeral towers if you have the time.

I visited in the morning and I had the entire lake to myself! Well, there was the boatman as well and the guide who toured me around the peaceful lake for an hour before disembarking at Sillustani. But no other tourists, woohoo! The island in the midst of the lake is also a sanctuary for the vicunas. I got to see a couple of them from afar. If you want solitude and gorgeous views, visit Lake Umayo!
