A 50 mile ride. Some along the canal. Some on the mountain area. With the canal water level down, vast fields of 100 year old stumps were visible from the manmade Gatun Lake.

Had opportunity to take this train ride as part of recent stop in Panama City. We were bussed to Colon where we boarded train for an approximate 2 hour train ride back to Panama City. Excellent views and narration while train was traversing the countryside. We were in standard cars and didn’t pay for upgraded seats for some car. Don’t think it would have been worth it as standard cars had open air viewing at end of cars to take pictures or view scenery while going down the track. Small snack box provided upon seating & beverages offered. Ride quality was excellent and crew was very cordial throughout the trip. Opportunity provided at end of trip to pick up some fairly priced items at the gift shop where we disembarked from the train.

Today we traveled on the Panama Canal Railway & have been able to obtain confirmation that the train sadly only runs for cruise ship bookings now. We travelled from Colon to Panama by train and then a coach back. The train stabled at Panama. The disadvantage is the cost which was high at $250 as we paid for the domecar. However I now know the $200 alternative would have been absolutely adequate as I spent most of my time in the open car area behind the dome. I emailed the company to check on the train, they emailed back saying it’s not running. No mention of it running for cruise ship bookings. And annoyingly they don’t allow outsiders to purchase tickets for the same train.

This train ride is SHUT. (June 2023) with no set date to reopen. I got an email from the company. Searching online offers conflicting info...this is the fact.

Our tour guide was Extremely knowledgeable. I don’t think that there was a historical question that he was not capable of answering. I wish I could acknowledge him more appropriately, but I don’t remember his name (maybe Manuel). The train ride was pleasant. Bus was comfortable. Snacks provided. This was an MSC tour

We embarked after a bus ride from Fuerte Amador to Colon. A beautiful Art Deco carriage - brass, mahogany and green lights. An observation area, between carriages. Clever Snack Box with the history of the Canal set out on the packaging. The views change from city outskirts to dense vegetation, lakes and glimpses of the Canal and its bridges. Very interesting perspectives. A stop at the new Agua Clara locks with informative video presentation and tasteful souvenir shop.

Confirm that Is still closed (they say for COVID) in March 2023, they don't seem to have any intention of reopening. They do sometimes special events though but no idea how to check this.

The Train still isn't running, but the tour company arranged for a private tour with a local guide in his car. He was very knowledgeable.

While this may be a once in a lifetime trip, definitely once is enough. Not particularly exciting. But nice to be able to say that you've done it.

TripAdvisor should remove this and other attractions still closed after COVID. Too many are showing as still viable options which are still closed, or out of business.
