Locks

Pretty busy when we were there. Ship in progress transiting. Sight lines good be better. Bleacher seating and standing room. Get there ahead of crowds is my advice.

The Gatun Locks were in the final stages of expansion construction when we visited, so there was no visitor center to stop in. Though, looking at what was being built is impressive. Of all the locks, the Miraflores Visitor Center on the Pacific side has the best visitor center. They are all worth visiting. I highly recommend hiring a guide.... More

Have always wanted to come to the Panama Canal. It is amazing to watch the locks operate and remember that they were engineered over 100 years ago, and still are relevant.

My husband and I travelled to the Gtatun Locks as part of an excursion via a cruise. We had always wanted to see and experience the wonders of the Locks and we indeed had that opportunity. There are quite a few steps to walk up to find your way to the highest point and bet view of the Locks in... More

I have been through many locks in my travels but this one was special due to its history. We went up to the observation deck and saw two ships come through the locks. The place was built in 1913 and many people lost their lives building it. They are going through an expansion period as they are building another lock... More

Whatever you do, do not book a cruise that stops in Colon without going through the locks. They are superb. Our recommendation is to sail through one way and book a tour to watch your own ship coming back through them. The Canal Expansion Project is about to open to add further interest to this location. Superb!

There is a reason why it is called threading the needle because these super-container vessels go through a canal with only 18 inches on either side guided by sticks and ropes. For a photographer there are great shots to be had. It takes s10 to 20 minutes to see the locks actually making something take place but with patience you... More

We came to visit on a Caravan tour. We approached from the north from Colon first by paved road and then by gravel as we drive past the old locks and through the construction zone of the new locks. The new locks are very impressive and it is to Panama's credit that they took the leap of faith and built... More

The locks are just impressive! These are old school compared to what is being built! Don't forget to explore gatun. The new canal extension is impressive
