This is a key stop. Imagine all the Caribbean history of pirates and galleons. Well, it all happened right here. The forts and cannons are still there, right where the Spanish left them. The forts are totally open and free and right there in town, easy to walk around while you're waiting for the bus.

I love history but the ruins aren't labelled and unless you do your research, you might not know what you are looking at. Most places and countries will label the ruins in the park so you know what happened and what you are looking at. I didn't know until I came home and looked it up on the computer. If... More

The bus ride to Portobello was at least 2 hours and when we arrived we didn't see much. The ruins were interesting but not worth 4 hours on the bus. Had lunch at a little cafe and only got half our order - after AT LEAST a half hour wait.

My brother and I took a day trip out to portobelo from San Carlos, road signs are almost non existent.. so make sure you have gps or maps (which are impossible to find in Panama. The forts were really neat and it was absolutely gorgeous out there. We stopped on the side of the road and went snorkelling, you will... More

Great little town and ok to good holding in the anchorage. No real dingy dock but we were able to tie up in front of a Restaraunt and buy a drink

We rented a car for the 96km drive across the isthmus freeway and up the Atlantic coast to Portobello. There is only one exit off this toll road marked Sabanitas, as the signage for Portobello is 2 junctions later in a crowded village with lots of local buses. Once on the 35km single lane paved road it becomes pleasantly rural... More

Day trip from Panama City to Portobelo to view the old forts. Interesting, but a quick view will cover it. The real gem is to hire a boat to one the the island coves across the bay. $10/person and $5 for parking will get you to a quite bay with clear water and above average snorkeling (for Panama) Bring your... Acces very bad on a highway through a couple of towns where people are all over the place. Costumed beggers in road and try to stop you. Not feel real safe. Forteress and Park is partially in one area and partially in another, seperated by town and no sinage to give traveler any help. No parking lot. Park in purple... More

Went there in February 2017. There are no/very little signage to let you know what things are and where they are. The old Spanish forts are amazing, but have trash all over them and are not kept up with. The views are amazing, but there is NO parking. I would have gladly paid $10 to park, get a ticket to...
