The Square Tower was once part of the city's defenses. Now nicely painted and lighted at night, with a restaurant at the ground level. In the middle of the riverfront walkway.

This place is a photogenic building by the Waterfront. It has been turned into a restaurant so unless you are eating there, you won't be able to go in.

It is one of the features of Sarawak River waterfront or esplanade. A nice white square tower built in 1879 to guard the town from raiders. Its function changed from guardian post, to prison, and then finally becomes dinner place. When we visited unfortunately it was closed so we have no idea what it was inside. However, a nice spot to use as background for photos whan wandering along the waterfront.

If you have a simple view of a historical building now a restaurant and only open at night, then you will be satisfied seeing it. It's history standing there before you now and you won't be able to go inside.

Enjoy the views across the river and the road and use this to stop to either move to India Street, Jalan Carpenter (Old Kuching Street) or cross the bridge across the river.

At night the area also lights up.

This was an intereting old building with absolutely no signage as to what it is (was) or its history. It has been well maintained . It was built in 1879 as a prison and later was used as a fort but was never involved in a significant incident.Worth a lok.

Don’t miss the Square Tower at the edge of the Waterfront as you stroll along the south bank of Sarawak River. From the top of the tower you can view the same spectacular vistas of Mounts Santubong and Serapi that enchanted such illustrious visitors as Somerset Maugham. It was originally meant as a prison when it was built in 1879. It later became a fortress but it never fired a shot in any conflict, unlike its wooden predecessor which was burnt down in the 1857 Gold Miners’ Rebellion.

A well maintained historical building along the scenic Sarawak River. It is located opposite the old courthouse. Visitors can walk around the area to enjoy the beautiful scenery and admire the beautiful State Legislative Assembly Building across the river. Visitors can also walk across the river via the new pedestrian bridge. Best time to visit is in the evening to avoid the hot sun and remember to bring along your camera!
