We were in Penang for seven nights, and this bar was empty every night. If you are interested in military history, it may well suit you, otherwise it's a bit dingy and boring. We had one beer and couldn't drink it quickly enough.

Travelled there in 1979 with the RNZAF. The best 6 weeks in a bar I have every had. Raved about it to my partner for years whom could not understand the attraction. Then 2010 I (we) finally returned. Now he understands. So sad about the...More

Seems like this place has a really long history, Was pretty quiet when I was here, but that is how I like it. Has a lot of airforce memorabilia from the days of the airforce base in Butterworth.

I went into this empty bar to escape the crowds but ended up having really great conversations with an older expat who had been living there since the 60's. The bar has a pretty interesting history and the owner Jenny will show you some great...More

This place has been around for a very long time. A lot of history goes into this place with photo albums from 20,30 years ago. Travellers can come in a go through the albums from way back.

This place's heyday was nearly 50 years ago - when it was quite probably the ONLY bar in George Town. Back then, it became for a while a favourite haunt of Australian pilots on R&R from service in Vietnam; and the majority of positive reviews...More

I visited on a Friday evening and, although neighbouring bars were busy, the HK Bar was empty. Jenny, the owner, was happy to chat and show photo albums with images of happier days, when Australian airmen on R&R from the fighting in Vietnam packed the...More

Tucked away mid way down Chula St, The Hong Kong Bar, is a great place for a cold beer and a chance to check out the unofficial history of the Australian Air Force and Army's time in Penang. Lots of photos to flick through of...More

First things first, the lovely owner (Jenny?) was so kind to open the bar for us even though she was clearly still closed. Ice cold beers and lovely conversation with Jenny. She had games for us to play and even shared some of the fruit...More

Stepping into this bar that is during my grandparents era. Ordered few cold drinks, and a nice chat with the bar owners. Played some old school bar games that involved matchsticks was really something different than the typical bars we usually go to. Do sign...More
