This place is 1 of 2 mandatory pit stops for me travelling from / to Kota Bharu via Grik. It happens my wife is from Kedah & I am from Kota Bharu & it makes this is very familiar sight. Ok Sincerely I never experience overnight stay here but been here morning, dawn, evening & even night. Talking about this place is not complete without the road leads to this lake.

Journey from west peninsular Malaysia: you will reach Kuala Kangsar (From Ipoh) or Kulim/ Baling (from Penang/ Kedah. Both roads will lead you to a small town called Gerik. This is the last point of civilization where you need to fill up & stock up before long windy journey.

Basically the road is a classic Malaysian Highway. Same like Karak highway 15 years ago & and I can say this is one of the best road to travel in Malaysia (p.s.: Motorheads will agree on that). It has beautiful scenery of Malaysian virgin rainforest at its best. Approx 40km down the road you will see a majestic view of bridge crossing tasik Temenggor. The pillar of the bridge is like huge & tall. Awesome engineering. There are 2 bridges; going to tasik Banding & out from there.

Tasik temenggor is 2nd largest manmade lake in Malaysia after Kenyir (Pls correct me if I’m wrong). It was created during completion of Temenggor Dam & flooded Orang Asli villages. This lake created Pulau Banding which is approx 240 ha in size. An army camp built at Pulau banding to protect water source from any intruder.

For pit stop there is a restaurant at both of the bridges but the 2nd bridge located at the water line which makes it very nice to snap a picture there.

Man this place is amazing. This is one of a kind place where you can find wild elephant (yes I have seen couple of times even on the road. For those who explore the place & stay there you can expect Refflessia (wrong spelling), Kelah, Hornbill, tiger (im not kidding)
To sum up this is a must go place for nature lover. Not to mention Royal Belum is located here too. http://royalbelum.my/.

You may serach on the history of the place including Gerik at http://www.lambdaspin.com/2011/09/sejarah-gerik-perak.html. Its in Bahasa anyway.

Remarks: Some people call this tasik banding & some tasik temenggor. Haha :)

Thanks for reading guys!

We - family with 2 young kids - stayed 2 nights at the Tasik Temenggor Discovery Island. In one sentence, we had a great time at a very quite private island with great views and a very warm welcome by Steve and his team.

After being picked up right on time near the bridge, it's about 15 min with the boat to the mini 'private' island. At the houseboats we met the owner Steve, a very nice Chinese gentleman, who can talk passionatly about the area. We could choose were to stay, at an A frame or the house boat. We liked the A frames because they are beautifull situated between nature. And the hut's are small but clean and just very cosy. It felt like a tent in the jungle!

It's pretty hot so we jumped into the lake immediatly, clear fresh water. Nice to cool off, only the trees sticking out all over make it a bit strange/tricky to swim. We didn't do all activites because it was hot and our two kids cannot walk to far, but the climb to the hill with the tower is very nice. About half an hour up, you do need good shoes, our sandales were not ideal. But the views are a good reward. We also visited the waterfalls the next day, a trip you should do. Alone in nature in the (very) cold water of the falls is a unique experience. Documentaries about the lake and environment are also very interesting.

The staff is very very friendly and we had a great time discussing with Steve about everything. Finally the food is fantastic!!

We think this is much much better than Tamara Negara! It's a hidden secret and we recommend it to everybody, altough the risk is that this place attracts to much people...

We booked a 3 night stay at the Tasik Temenggor Discovery Island Resort (www.ttddi.com.my).
They had advertised accommodation on a fleet of houseboats on the lake in the middle of the jungle. As it happened, we stayed at small chalets, each of which just big enough for a double bed, no wardrobes. Each hut has an outdoor shower and sink and a small balcony overlooking the lake - see photographs for views!
There were separate toilets, but as we were the only guests at the time, this wasn't too big a problem.
The owner, Steve, took us on various trips into the jungle to see wild flowers, elephant tracks (no animals though!) and visits to some natives' villages nearby (Asli) which were quite ok as Steve knew the elders and went there just to have a chat.
We were looked after very well, given some good home-cooking. Especially our two boys (aged 14 and 16) enjoyed themselves.
There is no electricity during the day, only in the evening through a generator. It really is in the middle of nowhere. A fantastic escape. If you're not too worried about mod cons, it's a great experience!

On the way from Grik to Kota bharu, we took a lunch stopover at this place. The view point and lunch by lake side was awesome. However, the food was being served in very little portions for the cost being paid. Taste wa also not that good. There are several jungle tours and rafflesia tour at this resort. But, we could not take any of them as it has to be booked earlier. Please call and take an appointment before to enjoy all the activities there.

There are lots of picturesque views that can be seen along the East-West Highway (route 4) as you traverse across the Titiwangsa main range from Gerik in Perak to Jeli in Kelantan. We will always make a brief midway rest stop at Pulau Banding (Banding Island) where Belum Rainforest Resort is, after crossing Lake Temenggor Bridge. It is well worth a pull-off just to stretch your legs from the long drive, have a bite and enjoy the pretty and tranquil natural scenery at the lakeside.

You may even choose to stay overnight at accommodations around Temenggor Lake or Pergau Lake Sanctuary Park, popular with fishing enthusiasts. Location wise: Temenggor Lake is actually situated in Hulu Perak whereas Pergau Lake is located in the state of Kelantan. Both lakes and Pulau Banding are man-made, due to the construction of hydroelectric dams in Temenggor and Pergau.

We stayed at Belum rainforest resort. Book a Belum discovery tour via them. There were around 20 people and 1 english speaking guide. Meaning that most people never heard what was said. The area is exciting and fantastic to see but I have seen much better guiding in other areas of Malaysia and would prefer to see the rainforest in Taman Negara og Borneo if I should go again.
