Memorable visit again here with my family. The place is well-maintained, my daughters that came here this time didn't remember they were here 5 years ago. But good experience to show them part of our piece of history.

The famous historical site in Labuan Island is definitely none other than the Japanese Surrender Point. This is where the Japanese officially surrendered their ruling on Labuan to the Australian in charge. About 50 meters away from the surrender point, the ceremony of signing and the handover took place. Lieutenant General Masao Baba officially handed his sword as a sign of handover to Major General George Wootten during the ceremony. This ceremony marks the end of World War II in Borneo. Another interesting and historical fact towards this Surrender Point is that this is the place where the trials of the first war crime were conducted in the whole of South East Asia. The nearest attraction that is too having historical means is the Peace Park. The park is built by the Japanese right next to the Surrender Point as they felt sorry for the trouble caused by their forefathers in the past. The park acts as a tribute to respect and appreciate the scarification of the lives that are involved in the World War II. Just as its name, the Peace Park marks the promise between Malaysia and Japan on peace and friendship.

Fo me, if you missed that point, that's mean you missed the whole Labuan. That is really a meaningful place, stating the place where Japanese surrender to the Allies, and the point which witnessed the coming of post World War 2 era.
The memorial stone there states "Here, on the 9 Nov, 1945, the commander of the 9th division, Australian Imperial Forces, received the unconditional surrender of the 32nd Japanese Sourthern Army in North Borneo and Sarawak".
Just few steps away from Peace Park and Layang-layang beach, Surrender Point can be accessed by taxi or rented car. For more of our experience in Labuan, pls visit our blog at http://bettyandlingshing.blogspot.com/2009/12/labuan.html

Locating next to the Peace Park is the Surrender Point Memorial, where Lieutenant General Masao Baba, Commander of the Japanese 7 Army and Supreme Commander of Japanese Forces in Borneo, surrendered the forces under his command to Australian Major General Wootten. The official surrender ceremony was held in this very spot on the 10th of September, 1945. Two plaques have been stolen from this site and they will be restored soon as stated in the notices. The opposite Layang-Layang beach is a clean and great place to picnic and enjoy the unobstructed sunset view over the South China Sea.

This is a place where the japanese surrendered after hiroshima was bombed in year 1945. Nothing much to see here, other than enjoying the serene beach, sea breeze and some local BBQ foods and coconut stalls nearby. Its a great place to hang out in the evening if you are looking for a quiet yet comfortable place to sit down and enjoying the soft sea breeze.

This is not your usual review. Labuan is an Island in the Bay of Brunei in the South China Sea. My one and only visit was in 1965, having been flown in on board a Blackburn Beverley aircraft from Singapore courtesy of the R.A.F. . A fantastic island to visit. I was there for 6 months as a military posting in the Royal Signals. The only problem we had was getting used to the humidity, no air con in those days! We were billeted in a half open sided tin hut. Mo doors or windows, just open to the elements. Monsoon season saw copious amounts of rain, the benefit was it was warm.
Although then things seemed and were a little on the primitive side everybody soon got used to it and a more enjoyable time, I have yet to have.
The only town was Victoria and the only way of the Island was boat , or for service personnel, R.A.F. Labuan, now the civilian Airport.
If you are contemplating a trip to Labuan, my advice would be to grasp it with both hands.
It was brilliant in 1965. With all the unrest of the area settled long ago and with all the investment and growth of the Island it will mow be absolutely FANTASTIC. If I had the funding available I would go back in an instant

Just one of the few "tourist" to do thingy in Labuan.
Worth a visit if you have some time to kill. In memory of the war.
