Because the water at the beaches weren't that clear we thought taking an Island Hopping Tour would take us to better beach spot. As expected, the tour was a typical Southeast Asian island hopping tour with travelers being herded like animals with zero organization. We eventually ended up on a speed boat and headed to Pulau Dayang Bunting past some decent scenery. The stop was for the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (named for the rock formation behind the lake) which gave us only 30 minutes for swimming or kayaking. Although minimal, paying the extra 5 bucks for island entry and renting life vests was annoying when it could easily be charged up front with the tour. The lake was nothing special and was a bit suffocating with a small swimming area roped off with tourists being dropped off every few minutes by the scores.

For the trip, we purchased an organized excursion (I won’t write the name of the travel agency and the cost, because the program and prices are approximately the same). Like all organized excursions, this one also has its pros, but more cons. However, there are no special questions for the organizers; the “poorly organized” fellow travelers who abused alcohol were annoying! Perhaps because of this, the impressions were lower than expected. In addition, the water in the lake seemed dirty for swimming. And the issue of childbirth (The Lake of the Pregnant Maiden is a kind of place of pilgrimage, many who have problems with pregnancy come here, this place is surrounded by at least a dozen beautiful legends. It is believed that after swimming here, a woman finds the long-awaited happiness of motherhood (c)) here with my wife is not relevant 😁 But overall, the place is beautiful and worthy of a visit!

We were turned off by the hordes of tourists being taken to this island each day. The boats go very fast so if you have any back problems, beware. They bounce up and down on the waves without slowing. Hundreds of people come through here each day so it's very busy and you walk in long line ups.

Be prepared for a good walk. It’s a part of island-hopping tour. Amazing island, many activities, many monkeys as well. Care for your belongings. Juice stalls: don’t miss mango and watermelon juices. If time permits, buy other ticket to reach to the top of the island where you can practice more water activities.
Extraordinary day.

Was taken to here during the jet ski tour. Before entering the island, the jet ski tour guide did shared with us the mystery story about this island and make kind of expecting it.
After I reached the island, I'm so glad that this island was part of the tour, so I no need to waste my money and time just to be here. The lake was disappointing, and the facilities as well. I rather they did not make it commercialize so it can remains as nature as it is.

We booked an island hopping tour from the ferry jetty, it incorporated a 3 island tour of Pulau Beras Basah - Eagle feeding at Singa Besar and Dayang Bunting, the pregnant maiden island.
The white sand beach of Beras Basah was lovely, but beware of the monkeys. Due to idiot tourists feeding them they have become cheeky and will bag snatch and rake for food. Bit of a shame really because people don't understand wild animals. The sea here was lovely to swim in however wasn't clear enough to snorkel or see anything of interest. In hindsight it may have been better to swim around the pier as there were lots of tropical fish harbouring on the down-sun side. (45 mins given to wander)
Next was the eagle feeding. This was interesting to watch and the birds are magnificent. However a little boring as we hung about too long.
Next was Dayang Bunting. Our boat driver stopped to show is the best viewpoint of the pregnant maiden hill before continuing round the coast to dock and let us on to the Geoforest island park. Again we were given 45 minutes- not long enough!
It is a short walk up the stairs for anyone of average fitness and ability, elderly or unfit will perhaps take a tad longer as the steps descending to the freshwater lake can be steep in places.
The lake looks lovely and the sounds of the jungle echoing over are great. We went for a swim away from the crowds and it was lovely water although not super clear so you can't snorkel or see anything, but this may have been due to the recent heavy rainfall we had, still worth a dip though.
Overall the island hopping is worth it for the sights. 👍

The lake is beautiful. If you go with a guide he will give you only one hour to stay. If you go in a chartered boat you can stay as long as you want. My children enjoyed the lake better than the beaches (they have been to lots of beaches before).
As you enter from the jetty, you will have to pay a small sum to the government and buy tickets. At the ticketing office there is a tour agent who would try to persuade you to buy a package (life jacket + canoo + paddle boat) which he sells for about 3 times the real price. Don't buy tickets from him. Walk down to the lake and there are two stalls at the lake from where you can rent life jackets, canoo and paddle boat for lot cheaper.

It used to be pristine and serene. 15 years passed and this is so commercialized beyond recognition. They set up 2 children pools within the lake, which IMHO, was not maintained; please expect green emerald unclear water. The tour said to spend 1 hour here, and I would recommend, 30 mins the most, i.e hike all the way to the platforms, take a picture to show that you are have stepped on Pulau Dayang Bunting and hike back to the pier again. Food and drinks are more expensive than mainland, this is expected. We skipped the rides within the lake. Too many people doing this tour, avoid peak period/school holidays.

The direct translation of Pulau Dayang Bunting is “Pregnant Maiden Island” in English. It is the 2nd largest island in Langkawi’s cluster of islands. It is populated on 1 side & uninhabited on the other where its famous lake, Pregnant Maiden Lake is situated.
Upon reaching the jetty, you will see a narrow concrete walkway leading to the lake. A small entrance fee is imposed prior to visiting the lake. The walk uphill takes about 15 minutes & you will definitely be greeted by many monkeys along the way. Do not feed them as they might turn vicious on you. There are probably 100 steps leading you down to the lake soon after the ascension climb.
The Lake has a story behind it. Legend has it that a long time ago, a man by the name of Mat Teja had fallen in love with a fairy princess called Mambang Sari at the lake. They were married & she bore him a son. Unfortunately, their son had passed away at the age of 7 days from a mysterious illness. The heartbroken princess then laid their son’s body in the lake & returned to her heavenly abode. The princess had also blessed barren women to conceive after bathing in the lake & to-date, the locals believe that to be true.
Oddly enough, though the lake is close to the sea & separated by rocks, it is a freshwater lake which is surrounded by a backdrop of limestone formation hills resembling a pregnant woman lying on her back. You can easily make out a woman’s protruding pregnant belly from the outline of the hills.
The lake is fitted by some wooden decks & since it is a freshwater lake, it is good for swimming. However, the average depth is 10 metres & hence, it is compulsory to use a life jacket before any swimming can take place in the designated swimming area. You can rent the life jackets at a cost. However, we were advised by our guide not to swim in the lake as there had been a few mishaps in the past. There is no changing room though. So, if you are up for a swim, come with your swimming attire beforehand. Two of our friends jumped into the lake while another friend & I sat down & dipped our feet into the water.
Next, we rented a solar operated paddle boat for RM15 & spent time enjoying the scenic view of the hills while paddling. There are also kayaks for rent but we did not try them out. Souvenir & gift items are also sold from a stall. Take note that food stalls can only be found near the jetty. So, buy your food before embarking on the journey to the lake.
There is a boardwalk that goes around the lake & through the mangrove forest. Unfortunately, we did not have time to explore it. I read that at the end of the boardwalk, you will reach a point called “Miracle Border.” It is the border between the lake & the sea. You will be able to see the lake & the sea separated by rocks. The sea is just 30 metres away, yet the water of the lake is not salty & this is a miracle. It is as if there is an unseen miracle barrier separating both types of water.
Do not miss a visit to this island & lake. They are an epitome of love, mystery, miracle & beauty.

How can I go to this island without using a tour as the tours are very expensive as I checked today ( they were more than 50 usd per person, which I found not reasonably priced) . are there any boats just going there? and this way I can only get a ticket.
Written 13 November 2018
Taking a separate boat would cost you more than the tour itself. Better take the tour and enjoy the time as you cannot stay on this island. There is no hotel and overnight stay is not possible.
Still you can ask local tour operators to cater to your request. Hopefully you get some deal, but chances are very less.

Hi Anoop,
Nothing near Dayang Bunting. You may at Kuah and take island hoping to Dayang Bunting.
Written 29 January 2017
There's only one way to get there, by boat and you can book your preferred package to visit Dayang Bunting island only from any travel and tour agents that can be found quite plenty in Cenang Beach. Just tell them you want to go to Dayang Bunting and they'll take you there. I'm not clear of where are you staying in Langkawi but it'll be easier if you stay in Cenang area.
Enjoy your trip!
