I can say this place really really sacred place, you will feel peace and calm the moment you enter the area. When you enter this kind of place need to respect the people in it, so remember to wear your hijab and proper outfit.

This is a beautiful building with a mix of Victorian and Malay architecture and resembles the Masjid Jamek Sultan Ibrahim in Muar. The minarets are shaped like Colonial era clock towers and the entire building is painted in a cute shade of yellow and white. In some ways it looks more like a grand mansion than a place of worship.

Sadly, I was asked to leave by the security guard because I’m not a Muslim. So don’t bother coming if you’re not either. I wasn't even disturbing any of the worshippers. I’ve read that another reviewer had the same experience, so I’m guessing that there is some kind of unofficial policy or just overzealous guards.

Wasn't allowed in because I'm obviously not a Muslim. Hostile stares from everyone and the "security man" shooed me out even though I don't think he was there in an official capacity. All in all a total waste of time.

Had my first chance to visit this auspicious, peaceful and tranquility white historical mosque. It gave us an inner feeling of shangrila type of eco-environment.

Being an avid fan of colonial buildings, I jumped at the chance of visiting the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque in Johor Bahru. It was our 1st stop after lunch, after a 3.5 hours journey from Kuala Lumpur.

The Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque sits on top of a hill, overlooking the Straits of Johor. It was built in 1892 by the order of the King, then. Although, the King did not live long enough to see it completed in 1900, the mosque bears his name.

When my partner & I arrived, we saw that some parts of the mosque was still under renovation or restoration.

The Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is a mixture of 3 architectural influences, mainly English Victorian, Moorish & Malay elements. There are 4 minarets which looked like the British clock tower in the 19th century with black coloured domes on top of them. The floors are made of marble stones & exterior walls, painted yellow & white.

Inside the main prayer hall, painted in gold are the ceiling & fans. The pulpit is an elaborate masterpiece on its own & used by the Imam when he reads the sermon on Fridays. There are intricate carvings & flower motifs painted in gold on the pillars inside the mosque, too.

A black spiral staircase that evokes feelings of yesteryears is located just outside the main prayer hall. Beautiful chandeliers are hung down from the ceiling. Ablution area & toilets are located downstairs for both men & women.

Overall, it is such a beautiful mosque & more importantly, it is well maintained & clean. I would definitely pay a visit every time I am down in Johor Bahru.

Built by Sultan Abu Bakar in the late 1800. Unfortunately he didn’t live to see the completion of the mosque.

The uniqueness of this mosque is that the ceiling is made from egg shells.

It’s a beautiful mosque and currently being renovated to the mosque original state by the present sultan.

The mosque is covered under reconstruction in April 2019. Don't know when it will reopen. Some pictures are possible from the outside.

It is a nicely designed place. Unfortunately, I could not pray in the main hall of the mosque and it was under repairs so I prayed in an additional prayer room. But it was a pleasure to be there anyway. Very close to Singapore that you can even pick up their phone signals :D
