At the end of a quiet mountain road is this pretty temple which is number 4 on the pilgrimage. It's a 2 km or so walk from the Rakan bus stop.

There are 5 temples in Tokushima that are part of the 88 Shikoku temple pilgrimage trail. This beautiful temple is one of the five and is well worth seeing.

Some temples along the Shikoku 88 temples pilgrimage are interesting. Some are not. Dainichiji is among those not interesting but it deserves to be mentioned for a peculiarity. The area is divided in two parts by the street. On one side the is the Buddhist temple with its two buildings (of average interest as I said). On the other side of the street the is a Shinto shrine. You are likely to find this last area empty because pilgrims walking through the 88 temples of Shikoku could not be interested to visit a Shinto shrine. Anyway if you happen to visit Dainichiji don’t miss the opportunity to cross the street and walk around the shrine and the statue of two big horses. If you love walking uphill a path behind the shrine will take you to the ruins of an old castle.

This is a lovely temple to explore, but it is even nice to sleep over. The dinner and breakfasts were wonderful. To make it even more special, the Zen Master Priest, Kim Myoseon, joined us for breakfast.
