Even in the heat with the roof covering, it can be warm. Nice mix of shops and stores for shopping and a quick lunch.

A covered walking street with many shops, stores and places to eat. The merchants put the welcome mat out for the cruise ships in port and some offered free watermelon, tea and treats when we were there.

Enjoyed some of the shops in kochi, including bakery with some excellent bread...also. I sited nearby Sunday farmers market that was really interesting. All kinds of fruit and vegetables that were large and colorful. Tried some strawberries and to ottos both of which juicy and sweet. Also tried some tempura sweet potato that was SO delicious

The long covered streetwalks are a great way to wander in comfort, but as a shopping destination I wouldn't rate it well at all.

We were visiting Kochi from a cruise ship. We had shuttled to the bus depot a couple blocks away and started walking. We missed the mall the first time we passed it because we were on the other side of the street. We made a course correction and entered this shopping district - essentially a covered outdoor mall.
We walked the length of the mall, stopping at several stores along the way. What took me by surprise was that at two points in the "mall" there were streets with vehicular traffic that crossed right through the pedestrian areas. I was lost in thought and almost walked in front of a moving truck.
Vehicular traffic aside, this was an interesting experience for us. We browsed among the stores and were surprised at how much of the merchandise for sale was either jewelry or personal care products. We were also surprised that the stores have some of their merchandise displayed out in front of the stores. This told me that the Japanese are more honest than some other cultures.
If you are in town and don't have a tour booked, this is a worthwhile experience.

Typical of Japanese centres, this goes on for a long way, and is mostly under cover and a good spot when the rains come down suddenly! The first part coming off the main street is a bit ordinary, apart from the Japanese wedding shop that sells some pretty colourful kimono's, but then it gets better as you get into it.
Found a great little shop that sells some very nice umbrellas, some are hand painted.Quite a few eateries on the way through, and would have loved to know what was in some of the many packets of foodstuffs on sale, but again we had a language barrier.
Good thing though, no such problem at the very end of this market when you come to the Hirome marketplace, where there are food stalls aplenty, and you can sit down with the locals and indulge your curiosity. Alcohol is served there as well, seating is a little tight we found, but Japanese folks are nothing if not very polite and make room for you! Prices are very reasonable compared to fancier restaurants.
Exit is past the souvenir shop, surprise!

We strolled through the shopping arcade on a Monday on the way to the Kochi Castle Park.
The usual stores can be found here - clothing, housewares, souvenirs, coffee shops, bakeries, some eateries, a large Daimaru store.
We did notice several beautiful, bright, intricately designed banners that were hanging from the top/ceiling of the curved arcades which are probably there as part of an event.

The covered arcade houses a variety of clothing stores & places to buy food & drinks. I liked the Kochi café , with a casual, friendly atmosphere & a vegetarian lunch special, as well as non-veg meals, cookies, cakes, fruit juices and good strong coffee.

Hi. I visited a furugiya (used clothing store) on this street a few weeks ago and did not buy a used Yukata (summer mens kimono) for a friend of mine here in Melbourne Australia. If anyone can help with the phone number & name of the store it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg.
