While not as large as others such as Himeji castle, Matsuyama castle has a striking number of original buildings preserved (though it seems that many were rebuilt in the mid-19th century after a destructive fire). The chairlift up the mountain offers fine views, as does...More

The architecture is outstanding. The granite walls protecting the fort had curved vertical faces with large stones perfectly cut to fit with no mortar in the joins. The main fort & 5 storey tower took 26 years to build. The fort itself was constructed using...More

After having visited, and been disappointed by, Himeji Castle we weren't expecting a lot, however Matsuyama Castle really exceeded our expectations. The ropeway lift to get there is novel, but once you get to the first gate the experience really begins. Informative signs provide detail...More

We liked Matsuyama castle much more than Matsumoto castle. Matsumoto is empty inside and we were rushed and prevented from taking any pictures. However, in Matsuyama castle it's like a museum inside (you can lift a samurai sword to feel its weight, pick up a...More

It isn’t as big as Himeji but the massive curving stone walls sets it apart. It’s an amazing hilltop castle. Liked the clear descriptions inside the main castle up top. Reached the top 45 minutes early with a morning jog up and explored the grounds....More

I guess the nice part of the visit is the ropeway / chair lift taking you to the site. Efficient and nice ride. The Castle itself is OK, with nice views from above, but maybe after Matsumoto, Himeji , Osaka and others I am just...More

One of the best castlee I have seen in Japan. Covering quite a large area with several rings of defense, well kept, and the main tower in original condition, and a great view from the top level. The history and details wel explained in English....More

As this castle is on top of the hill, you can walk up or catch the cable car or chairlift there. We caught the cable car up and chairlift down. I particularly like the chairlift as it's quite slow so have plenty of time to...More

What's not to love about an old castle on top of a hill which you arrive to via cable car! You've to walk the final few hundred yards but immaculate toilets and shops to keep you going.

One of the few castles in Japan that has not been rebuilt. To access the castle you have a choice of either a cable car or a chair lift. After the chair lift it is a bit of a walk uphill to the top of...More
