Oops, it burnt down in 2019 and will be years in reconstruction. You can see almost as much without paying the entrance fee which only really gets you to climb up higher and see views over Naha.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 June 2023
- The1ExplorerNorth Sydney, Australia1 contributionNice place, but upsetting surpriseI came to Shurijo by taxi. Bought tickets, and we found out it burnt down in 2019... Depressing indeed. There were virtural tours and some remains of lookouts, but we only saw construction. I hope Shurijo will be restored in the future, and I will be able to come back.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 August 2023
- Teen TravelerSai Kung, China18 contributionsHistory + ViewsI love learning about a places history when traveling, so I really liked visiting the castle. Its about a 10 minutes walk to the monorail, which isn't bad, and has a lot of nice little cafes around it. The castle park was really pretty, and I loved the stamp postcards with stations all around the park. However, I would not recommend the paying for the private area, because there was not a lot there. It was just a building where they are making the new replica, but at the moment it just looks like raw materials, and there is not a lot to look at. It did however give you access to an AMAZING view by going up all the stairs. I think you can conquer the free areas in an hour or hour and a half. I would recommend going just to learn about the history of the island, and see how pretty it is if nothing else.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 September 2023
- WinkSeaAtlanta, Georgia149 contributionsNice to visit and see the great views, but can't go inside.Nice to visit the outside and walk around the grounds. There is a good restuarant on the grounds with good food. Lots of restrooms in the area. You can't go inside the castle since it is under construction. But still worth seeing. None, if you take the monorail to the castle, show them your monorail ticket and get a good discount. We took the monorail from the Hilton Double Tree to the Castle. It is a short walk to the castle from the monorail stop. The monorail station is right outside the hotel.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023

As a foreign tourist this was not worth the trip.
You can climb up the original parts of walls for the view but that isnt spectacular I'm afraid.
The main building was burnt to the ground in October 2019 and is still unlikely to be finished any time soon (someone previously has indicated 2023 - wasnt and very unlikely to be) This is, I think, the third time it has burnt down, hmmm? maybe someone is trying to tell them something?

Yes, the main buildings at Shurijo Castle have burnt down and there are efforts to clean the area up and start construction again. Although most buildings are no longer here, I feel the castle area is worth a visit. The walls are still in tact as are some structures. It will be many years before the project is complete. This castle has burnt down many times and has rebuilt so it will be fascinating again once it's up and running. You can still walk the grounds although a lot of places are currently blocked off. There are a lot of historic markers worth reading, I learned a lot. After visiting the castle, I walked the park across from it and explored the surrounding area. I feel if you are in Okinawa, might as well visit even if it is not in full swing. I went and really enjoyed my visit here.

The castle was burned last year then there is nothing to see there now, so if you go there you will lose your time.

What remains for tourists to view (in December 2023) now that the main buildings of Shurijo Castle have burned down?
Gardengel-IoW
West Sussex, UK773 contributions
The original gate and a lot of the walls. Of the actual castle itself, nothing, it was completely destroyed in the fire, and It is being completely rebuilt and not due to open until 2026.
There are a lot of steps to climb and slopes.
There is a bit of a view if you do go and get to the top walls but its not wonderful.

We took the rail and then walked to the castle. Spent 2-3 hours, depending on how long you spend reading all of the history. The grounds are wonderful! There is a great traditional restaurant down the street that is wonderful for lunch

Hi,Brian. we will be in Naha port for only about 6 hours, and would appreciate suggestions as to what historical and local culture we could see in that time. How about Shuri Castle and the Royal Gardens? would welcome any thoughts on these or other similar sites. many thanks.

Our cruise calls into Naha for one day in October this year and instead of doing a cruise excursion, we thought we might catch taxi's to the areas we want to see. Are taxi's readily available from Shurijo Castle? I have looked at maps and cannot see taxi stand marked on any of them. Thanks.

There are plenty of taxis, just ask someone official and they can direct you to one. Bring cash, as Japan is a cash society and chances are your taxi may not do card.

What time are the performances and whereabouts in the castle grounds should one go to watch them?
Ms. Yokohama

There are various performances, depending on the time of year. If you're referring to the dancing, it's done Weds.,Fridays, Sats., Suns., and holidays at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. in the area of the castle that you don't need to pay to get in to.
Details about all the performances (location, dates, times, cost if there is one) are on the Shuri Castle web site. Google "Shuri Castle" and click at the top to change it into a language you can read.

Hi guys, would like to ask is it convenient to travel around Naha city by public transport?
Places of interest I would like to cover will be as follow:
1. Shuri castle
2. Former Japan navy underground HQ
3. Himeyuri monument
4. Ryuku glass mura
I will start the journey from Naha cruise pot. Is there any metro station near cruise pot that I can take to any of the place above? And what will be the estimated cost?
Appreciate the reply.
Thanks

Hi Traveler: I can honestly say there is a public light rail that goes to the Castle convveniently from Naha, the same light rail from the airport. We went to one cave about 30 minutea by public bus and there are buses everywhere. My wife's cousin rented a car to see "American Town" and the Aquarium. That's what I know. Have a good trip.
what's the entry fee for an adult?

The English address to the official website for Shurijo is in a simple Google search for it, and gives you all the pricing information you need, annot link it or I would. Normal adult tickets are \820, while there are an assortment of discounts for students and elderly, and children under 5 are free. Hope that you enjoy, and get to view the amazing history that they are painstakingly restoring. Good travels and Godspeed.
