This is a quite extra-ordinary place in a very mundane location, above the shops in the city centre. As other reviews shows it hosts an international standard of travelling exhibitions, when I was there it was Amono, but many exhibitions feature western artist - recently they'd manage to borrow 4 Monet's.

Usually with some interesting exhibitions. Worth a visit esecially after a tired day of sightseeing or walking in Kamitori and Shimori malls in the downtown area for a short break.. one could just sit and rest a bit or have coffee in the adjacent cafe ..

This is a really nice place to rest from the busy streets of the shopping arcade. It is normally quiet and peaceful. They switch up the art exhibitions every month or so, some are free and some arn't.

This museum was a fill in due to so much of the city being renovated; main tourist interest places are closed or limited access.

We went to see the art museum as we’d read about the information available on the surrounding area and earthquake. While we didn’t see any of that (must’ve been an old exhibition) we did find unique works of art. Unfortunately I can’t read Japanese well so couldn’t make much sense of the explanations so would like to see English translations to enhance foreigners’ experience to the museum. As we went late we stumbled across a pianist performing (at 7pm) which was a lovely experience. The highlight however was a (temporary?) exhibition of a local University Professor’s architectural drawings which my husband particularly enjoyed. This exhibition alone would be well worth the visit!

We learnt so much about the surronding areas form this Museum. Lots of information on the earthquake that hit Kumamot a year ago, the hardship and the rebuilding and restoration they are currently doing to get the city back to its finest is incredible. There was also a fantastic exhibit on at the time of our visit which only cost about $12 to get into.

It is more a gallery than an art museum. It is not a big gallery but with interesting collection. It is also situated right at the shopping center which is convenient.

This is not easy to find as it is up some escalators in a shopping mall. It isn't free but it did exceed my expectations. There was a photography exhibition on when I went and there was a lot of work in a number of rooms including video work. Just a note, outside the gallery area, if you walk across the hall there is a really good free indoor kids play area.

The museum is quite small but had two small exhibition rooms and one large one. The large exhibition space exhibited works by locals and elderly people in the community. It was charming but not necessarily for art lovers. With that being said, the staff was super friendly and helpful, providing an English guide and helpful information. Worth a visit if you have extra time (It was free!) while visiting the castle. Open on Mondays which is very uncommon!
