I saw this house on a map I was looking at. I’m so glad I did. Natsume Soseki was the author of “I am a cat.”, one of the truly great pieces of Japanese literature. Soseki’s house is the former house of a samurai and has many rooms. The caretaker is a fantastic gentleman, very soft-spoken, but happy to share information and show photos. The garden is also beautiful and to see one of the neighborhood cats lounging in the garden was a perfect visual for what Soseki may have seen. At 200 yen to enter, it is a true bargain. Highly recommended for people who read, for people who like traditional Japanese architecture, and people interested in Soseki. It’s a wonderful attraction in Kumamoto. I’m so glad I went.

Soseki is a wonderful writer, and epitomises the tension between traditional Japan and Teisho-period, Western influenced Japan. This is one of his homes in Kumamoto, and probably the most important because here his daughter was born. Soseki's wife said this was their best house in Kumamoto. It has a pleasant garden, now in some disorder. Unfortunately, the house - which contains his personal effects and some manuscripts - is closed to the public because of damage in the 2016 earthquake. Nevertheless it is worthwhile going there - it's a short walk from the city centre - because even though yo can only see the garden and the house from the outside, it is poignant and in its decaying state, a curiously apt reflection of Soseki's novels.

I wanted to go here for a while but getting there was a little laborious (I walked there from the castle) and then when I arrived found it was still not open to the public. The gardens are open but the house itself is closed. A bit disappointed because Soseki is one of the great writers of Japan and he spent around 4 years here in Kumamoto. I would have liked to explore some more.
