About
Sengan-en is a traditional Japanese garden and stately home that has been passed down in the Shimadzu family for over 350 years. The garden boasts spectacular views of active volcano Sakurajima, and the house provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of a powerful feudal lord. Sengan-en and the surrounding area was fundamentally important in the modernization of Japan. It was here that Western industrial technology was introduced to Japan, studied and used in the creation of modern factories. Shoko Shuseikan is a museum set in a 150 year old stone building originally used as a machine factory. Learn about the 800 year history and culture of the Shimadzu family, and the first steps towards the industrialization of Japan. In July, 2015 Sengan-en and Shoko Shuseikan were recognized as World Cultural Heritage Sites related to Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.

Picturesque garden facing volcano and ocean
This attraction is best on feng shui location, facing ocean/view of active volcano.sakurajima , and back by cliff and mountain. It’s historical place for Shimadzu family in Meiji era , where japanses modernization set up here . The complex includes japanese lushy garden, price Tadayoshi house and shrine and zen rock garden . Admission fee is reasonable for things to watch, inspire and dining . There are local unique kagoshima glasswares and satsuma-ware( unique pottery) exhibition and sale store. Please allow atleast 1hour to be inspre d by this amazing place.

Scenic Garden with good cafes and souvenir shops
One of the best gardens i've visited in Japan. Though for me Japan is synonymous to a forest/garden, Sengan-en is one peaceful and breathtaking garden you can explore. There are shops and cafes that serve local dishes and the whole experience is so relaxing, if only it wasn't too hot (I was there when spring was almost over). Their matcha flavored food are great so must try. There are also quaint souvenir shops along the trails and they sell inexpensive practical items and cute trinkets. Aside from the garden trails and shops, they also have museum/showrooms if you want to be indoors. One of the best views is the one facing Mount Sakurajima.

    A relaxing scenic garden
Beautiful Japanese garden in a magnificent setting. Manicured and cared for and whilst busy there were still places to sit and take in the scenery in peace and quiet. Positioned to take in the view over the bay to the active volcano. Allow at least 3hrs to enjoy without rushing. Thank you to the owners for opening the garden for others to enjoy.

Amazing garden with an exceptional view
Sengan-en garden is a place that time looses its meaning. One can spend two to three hours wandering around. The garden overlooks Sakurajima volcano and the Kinko bay and is home to amazing sculpted trees, the residence of the former owners of the garden, flowers, a pond, restaurants and souvenir shops. The garden is simply amazing and especially during the time we visited, the autumn colors are said to be among the best in Japan.

    Beautiful Gardens and Views
There are beautiful gardens and views across the bay from the many different paths throughout. Additionally, there are several exhibits and shops. Really need to allow at least 2 hours to really appreciate this wonderful place.

Absolutely worth taking the time to explore everything!
Absolutely loved this garden! At first we didn’t realize quite how huge the gardens went, all of the beautiful shrines were fun to explore. Definitely read all of the little signs around the home & park the story is lovely. Worth paying 1,600 yen per person to see everything! The house was beautiful and told the story of the family living there through the years.

Beautiful yet Mercenary Park on the Outskirts of Kagoshima
Even on an overcast day, with cherry blossoms faded and the view of the volcano across the water nonexistent, Sengan-en Garden is worth a visit. The beautifully manicured garden is filled with charming quirks and stunning details, and visitors are guided along a route that hits all the highlights. We enjoyed a leisurely hour strolling through Sengan-en, although we couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed by the abundance of gift shops, ice cream stands, and somewhat lackluster cafeterias along the way. Unfortunately, the garden has taken a very commercial direction that doesn't quite suit our taste.

Pointless to go here. Literally half the place is closed. The entire left sound of the grounds (the annex with historical buildings) is closed as is many of the trails due to being washed out. The gardens themselves are quite boring with no flowers, a bit of rolling grass and small lawns, and some pine trees scattered about. Not worth the time to take the bus here.

Only stayed in Kagoshima for a day but the garden is beautifully crafted and also provides an unobstructive view of the Sakurajima volcano. When you are there do grab lunch at their restaurant as it serves some good pork dishes there.

Went to Kagoshima as an easy side trip from Fukuoka. The town is vaguely worth a look- but Sengen-En is well worth the visit. It seemed a bit out of the way- but we got bus directions at the tourist office- the bus stop is adjacent- and it was easy to get to. Interest ing visually and historically.
