We like walking and decided to walk to the observatory from Tenmonkan. There were quite a few school groups and others up there, and it was certainly worth it.

Great free observatory covered by a city view bus or accessible by foot (steep climb). The view of the city with the Sakurajima in the background is breathtaking!

The sightseeing bus stops here and it's well worth staying here a while. You can see the city, bay, and Sakurajima here. Souvenirs are moderately priced as well.

Great view of the city and the Volcano. Take the time to get through the whole park. There are also some wild cats begging for your attention and food.
