Only go if the weather is good. A small observation platform provided great views of the city, the volcano- (Mt. Sakurajima which was very active on the day we visited) and the bay. Otherwise there wasn't much else to do there. A small souvenir shop and toilets were the only facilities at the top. We traveled with a tour bus group and parked at a lower lot that was surrounded by kitschy souvenir shops but the 5 minute walk through the large trees was serene. Shiroyama Hotel was a 5 minute walk from the parking lot.

The views are great on a clear day, especially in the morning. Its like a small version of Victoria Peak (on Hong Kong Island) up there, with a nice park with greenery and birds and views over the city and Sakurajima. The hop-on/hop-off bus stops here.

We’ll worth the walk up the hill, there’s a nice shaded walk under the trees if you aim for behind the modern literature mueseum.

I walked the trail to the observatory from the castle area. The hike was a bit long but fairly easy. I lucked out as the weather was alright, once at the top I was able to see the city of Kagoshima with Sakurajima in the background. The views are incredible if you come at the right time. There is a small viewing area at the top and a few vending machines. Great spot for photos!

A short ferry ride gets you across the bay where you can take a bus to the observatory. Skip the trip if the weather is bad or if visability is limited because you only go up here for the view of the city and volcano. Not too much else to do, I wouldn't plan more than one hour at the observatory.

Relatively easy hike to the observatory which reveals great view of the city and Mount Sakurajima. We were fortunate to be there on beautifully sunny days with clear views until the smoke from the eruption blew in our direction.

I visit this site frequently just to relax and view the city and Mt. Sakurajima. Hands down, the best view of Kagoshima City and Mt. Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and on a clear day, all the way to Mt. Kaimon. Friendly English guides are on hand to answer questions. The illumination is still up and beautiful.

From the base of the hill, it took me less than 20 mins to walk up at a steady pace. I know a bus can take you all the way to the top but I walked from my hotel in tenmonken and there are a lot of nice sights along the way. I would have preferred steps because switchbacks seem to stretch out the pain but actually, on the way down I was really grateful for the nice and gradual descent. I wet for sunset and if you spook easily you might want to bring a flashlight for the way down as the path is completely covered by trees and it got pitch black fast. It’s a nice way to get in a walk and a view, highly recommend!

Fine on a clear day and populsr with the locals. Short walk to the deck or a short drive to the top.
The views were worth the trip.
