When you exit the main exit of Kintetsu Nara Station, you will find a statue of Gyoki and a fountain. It is also used as a meeting place. In Nara, Gyoki is a well-known monk. Walk straight ahead with the statue of Gyoki in the background to Nara Park or Todai-ji Temple. It is also good to enter the east-facing shopping street for souvenir shopping and Sarusawaike. Gyoki will be watching over you as you start and end your sightseeing in Nara.

Gyoki was a Buddhist Monk who lived in the Kansai area from 668 to 749 (the Nara Period) . He has been attributed to being the founder of mapping in Japan and was responsible for building 49 Monasteries across Japan. The fountain features a small bronze figure of a Monk on top of a small fountain just outside the Nara Station entrance and worth seeing.

While walking back towards Nara Station we Passed by Kintetsu Nara Station and stopped to admire a fountain sculpture with a monk standing on top. We actually first noticed what might have been a real monk standing in front of the fountain and wondered what he was up to. He was standing completely still with his conical hat on and some flowers on a stand behind him. The statue is made of bronze and is situated in the square in front of the station and is a famous meeting point. Gyoki was a monk who was born in Osaka in 668, who was famous for his contribution to society during the 737 epidemic in Japan. He constructed ponds, bridges and houses for those that were inflicted by the disease.

It is located near Kintetsu Nara Station. Today is the Wakakusayama Yaki festival, so I decided to go home early, but I stopped in my tracks when I saw some street performances. I felt like the Bodhisattva of Business was smiling at me.

This statue has a monk collecting donations in front of it. I liked seeing this cultural sight, especially as he looked very traditional but was wearing brand new Adidas sneaks.

If you found a statue on top of a water fountain, then you should be near the shopping street and Kintetsu Nara Station. In some occasions, another real person was also found there to make a comparison as well.
