A great place to visit to see (worship) the awesome Buddha image made of wood. You can feel the tranquility of the temple and the walk on the approach. There is a pillar with a hole in it for you to slip through which I did, but not 40 years later.

I bought the ticket together with the entrance to the temple which was just another Y400 but it's more like just a nice quiet place to take a break from the crowds. There wasn't very much to see other than the movie which was difficult to understand as minimal english was used. The few exhibits of ancient pieces though interesting was just too little to piece together. I would give it a pass if I were to recommend anything.

Entrance to the museum is required. However there are a few pieces displayed outside the venue. Toilet facilities and a cafe are located inside for visitors use. If you have time, it is worth to enter and learn more of the history and development around the temple area.

We visited the Todaiji Temple on our last day in Nara and found it quite interesting. There's plenty of deer walking around on the way to the temple but don't get distracted! When you enter there is an incredibly large Buddha with lots of small Buddhas surrounding him. There is also a stall where you can write down your wish on a tile and it will be kept forever at Todaiji Temple. At another stall you can get some lovely calligraphy writing on a piece of paper and a stamp which I got and will always remember!
I found this temple quite fascinating, especially its history, and I feel it is worth a look in Nara!

I recommend a visit to the not-to-be-missed cultural center and museum at the Todaiji Temple. It's air-conditioned! Has great restrooms, a gift shop with high quality souvenirs, a sitting area with an interesting video documentary on the temple, a tearoom with Japanese style refreshments (I admit I would have preferred an icy cold Coca Cola on a roasting hot July day) - not to mention priceless pieces of Japanese art.

Incredible place / superstructure / icon of architecture.
It is enormous from the outside and from the inside:)
The sitting Buddha is a fantastic piece of art and a spiritual icon in the same time.

A separate ticket will cost 500 yen. But make sure to buy the ticket with the Todaiji temple ticket, if you visit both the places. It will cost only 800 yen to both the places opposed to 1000 yen when you buy separately.

We left from Osaka to Nara due to the 15m Buddha. We were not disappointed. Not only is the temple where the Buddha is housed amazing construction but the spirituality and history of the place is breathtaking. To make the day even better the local dear in the grounds are very friendly & cute. You can buy food for only 150 yen, i feel this is cheap.. You will need to shel out 500yen to see the Buddha but its worth it. There are many walks around the grounds that took up most of our day. I would recommend.
