An amazing structure built in the 600's, then pulled down and moved to the current site in Naramachi, Nara in the 700's, using the same materials.

Worth a visit if you are in the area but don't go out of your way as there are plenty of better temples in the region.

We had a great experience of this beautiful ancient temple. We happened to visit during the setsubun festival on the 3rd of February. There was a buddhist ceremony, a fire walking ceremony, martial arts demonstrations and the soy bean throwing ceremony. I recommend visiting this...More

A well designed and ancient structure. The entire site is elegant. Just a few structures but each lovely on its own and well integrated.

Gangoji like all other temples at Nara, has remarkable history over at least 1000 years. Yet its scale pales against Kofukuji. If one has limited time at Nara, I suggest visiting Todaiji and Kofukuji first.

Not just that, but also very quiet which helps creating a mysterious atmosphere. The chanting of the Buddhist monks added even more.

This was my second time coming to Gangōji, but in my Nara travels I was pursuing two complementary themes: firstly I was touring pagodas in the prefecture, and secondly I wanted to visit all of Nara’s traditional “7 Great Temples.” Gangōji is no longer a...More
