Standard illuminations were on before the Christmas season. This is a distinctive thoroughfare where first-timers can see Himeji City's large keep directly in front of Himeji Station, but it also plays a part in the residential road that is usually heavily trafficked by cars. By the way, there are quite wide and well-maintained sidewalks on both sides of the street, so tourist traffic was also noticeable.

It's the main street of city, from Himeji Station to Himeji Castle. Full of restaurants, shops, department stores and hotels. If you have enough time, I would suggest you walk from the station to the castle via this street instead of taking the bus.

Otemae Street was the main street leading from JR station to Himeji Castle. It would take about 15 minutes walking time to just walk through the thoroughfare excluding shopping, eating and phototaking time spent along the way. It was impressive to take photos on Himeji Castle from the purpose-built platform just in front of the train station.

It is the quickest way to go from the station to the Himeji castle which is what I assume most visitors are there for. It is a nice street, nothing special. But the view on a stunning Himeji castle makes this an enjoyable walk to the main event.

Otemaedori runs from the JR Himeji Station all the way to the castle. It is about 1 km (2/3 mile). It is a very walkable street with wide sidewalks as well as wide street. A boulevard in Europe/America. It is a very charming street, not busy with people until you get to right across from the castle. Many shops, restaurants, etc as one would expect, but knowing Japanese streets, very clean, well maintained infrastructure and interesting sights. Sanyo Deparrment Store is located on this street also. If walking back from the castle, stay on the right side of the street and about one or two blocks down, look for a sign for Lamp Cafe. It is a great cafe/bakery. It is in the side street. Also watch for enclosed shopping arcade, Miyuki Street. Cross the street and walk thru that also. Busses run up and down the street, but a walk really brings close to the local culture.

I was on crutches so couldn't go far from my hotel, and Otemae Street was luckily very close. All the different food options, convenience stores and other shops (pharmacy, clothes, nik-naks etc) made it a great place for me to get what I needed quickly and easily! And being covered with a roof meant I didn't have to worry about the rain.

The street is the obvious way from station to castle & is convenient. On the right though looking at the castle from the station, running parallel to the road is a wonderful covered arcade full of little shops and eateries. So leave the street and wander along there especially on a wet day as it is a fascinating attraction of it's own.

It’s a street full of shops. There is an arcade like on the right side of the street. I recommend walking there after a few meters in Main Street seeing Himeji Castle

So the highlight is the view of the castle getting closer and closer as you walk down this road... its a big main street really(!) lots of things to see and lots of different restaurants, bars and shops. We wanted to get to the castle so we didn't really stop along the way, but it a nice walk from the station to the castle anyway!

Are you able to tell me the name or precise location of this shop - I’m very interested in being able to purchase so many kimonos so cheaply? Thank you.
Written 19 February 2017
Hi,
Sorry, I don't remember the exact location or the name of the shop (cash transaction). I even went back to my pictures to see if I had one of the location, nothing. But if it's open, you won't miss it. On the way back from the Castle, on the right hand side sidewalk (I would say closer to the castle than the station), after a matcha ice cream shop, you will see a few racks on the left side of the sidewalk with "$5" sign. On the right side, there is a table with more folded up kimonos.
The man was really nice and friendly. He even threw in a few belts (cloth) and a kid's robe for free.
