About
Japanese garden 'Koko-en' was constructed in1992 at the exact site of Nishi-Oyashiki(Lord's West Residence) with Himeji Castle, one of the world cultural heritages, as a background. The area of this garden is about 3.5 ha and it is composed of 9 difficult garsens, built on the archaeologically excavated site of samurai houses and roads. Using the gardening techniques in the Edo period(ca.1600-1860) as a good model, 'Koko-en' creates historical atmosphere with the magnificent view of Himeji Castle. We hope you will have agood stroll and feel history in 'Koko-en' with Himeji Castle.

    A tranquil oasis, must visit.
Incredibly calm and beautiful Gardens. From the well manicured plants and shrubs, to the lovely koi in the lake, it is great to get away from the hustle and bustle of Himeji castle and chill. There are traditional Japanese rooms and pavements to walk through, and numerous Instagram worthy picture points all over. Great place for adults and kids to spend some time.

Wonderful! Skip the castle and come here instead
Wonderful Japanese gardens, so calm and zen-like. Not sure if we were just lucky with our timing, but it was almost empty and so relaxing to walk around the beautifully manicured gardens. Had lunch at the on-site restaurant - very traditional and lovely staff, well worth it. Skip the crowded castle and come here instead!

    Beautiful gardens
Definitely visit the gardens either before or after your visit to the Himeji castle! You can buy a combination ticket, and the two are next to each other. The gardens are separated by theme, and they are beautiful and relaxing! There is also a tea house and a few art exhibits, along with a small bamboo grove and various ponds.

    Gorgeous even in winter
The park is gorgeous even at this time of year (early February), I can only imagine how lovely it must be at its best. The tea ceremony garden was closed due to winter (and plant protection) but othwerwise all areas if the park were open and pretty! I recommend getting the castle+park combination ticket, if bought separately the entry to the park is more expensive. I also recommend getting the booklet at the entrance as it helps navigate the park's differrent areas.

    Lovely and deceptively large
This is a really lovely garden and a welcome break from the hoards of people at the castle. Get the combined ticket and the garden is virtually free. It’s much bigger than you think, it kept surprising us with extra sections to explore. It’s meticulously maintained like most gardens in Japan. Definitely worth visiting if you’re in Himeji.

Koko-en is basically a collection of small gardens, each of a different kind. At the time I visited it was unfortunately very crowded and the experience wasn't as relaxing as I'd hoped. But still, it was definitely worth the visit.

Tranquil and beautiful Japanese gardens adjacent to the Himeiji Castle. Peaceful and interesting as well as a great spot to sit and relax a while and listen to the streams or watch the Koi.

I’m expat American who has enjoyed living in Himeji and being an English guide at KOKO-EN GARden for over 12 years. I’ve enjoyed meeting and guiding Japanese and international visitors around KOKO-EN`s nine uniquely landscaped gardens. It was constructed in 1992 at the site of the lord's west residence, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Himeji municipality. While KOKO-EN opened in 1992, it`s landscaping design reflects feudal Edo era (1600-1860) style gardens, thus beautifully complimenting World Heritage National Treasure HIMEJI CASTLE which can be seen above it. Millions of people have visited KOKO-EN since it opened and was voted by visitors as the #1 Most Popular Garden in Japan 2023. You can enjoy strolling through nine differently landscaped Edo era gardens in any season, with Spring and Autumn being the most colorful and popular. I highlight of your HIMEJI CASTLE visit will be enjoying the peaceful beauty of KOKO-EN .
It is customary for Himeji City visitors to first visit HIMEJI CASTLE followed by a strolling tour of nearby KOKO-EN. I highly recommend if you visit HIMEJI CASTLE or KOKO-EN first, that you purchase a Combination Ticket at the ticket entrance. Buying a ticket for both allows you to enter at a discount price. BE ADVISED the usual Closing Times for both HIMEJI CASTLE and KOKO-EN is 4:30 PM, so if you buy a Combination Ticket make sure you have enough time to visit both HIMEJI CASTLE and KOKO-EN in the same day. (Extended opening hours may occur as per Special Events.) Combination Tickets are also sold at KOKO-EN which includes entrance to KOKO-EN and HIMEJI CASTLE. KOKO-EN GARDEN is located a 10 minute walk west of HIMEJI CASTLE.

What a lovely garden nearby the Himeji castle. Very easy to access and included in the castle ticket. Worse spending some time walking there after visiting the castle.
It's a typical Japanese garden combining trees, water and stones.
A very relaxing and peaceful experience.
Perfect for photos.
