About
Built in the beginning of the 17th century when Japan's unique castle architectural techniques had reached their peak, Himeji Castle was the first in Japan to be registered as a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage in 1993 as well as designated as a National Treasure in 1951. It is called "Hakuro-jo" (White Heron Castle) because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a white heron taking flight. Q1. Can I use a credit card? A1. Yes, you can. We accept major credit cards like VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, Diners and JCB. Q2. Do you have a coin operated locker? A2. Yes we do, but the number and kind of them are limited, so you had better use the ones in Himeji station. The biggest size is 1135H x 350W x 640D(mm). Q3. When is peak season? A3. Our peak is usually around late March to early April for cherry blossoms, late April to early May for Japanese Holiday Season so called 'Golden Week', and October and November for travel season for Japanese. Q4. When do I have to arrive to avoid congestion? A4. 15 to 30 minutes prior to opening time (9am (8am-8:30am for peak season)). Q5. How long does it take to walk around the castle? A5. Normally, it takes at least 90 minutes to explore the castle, but you can try to go up and down with no stop in 45 minutes.

- stressedoutmama99 contributionsStop off at HimejiWe stopped at Himeji on the way from Kyoto to Hiroshima and it was about a 15 min walk from the train station to the castle. The exterior of the castle is quite stunning. If you visit the main keep, while the inside of the castle is reasonably interesting there’s little in the way of displays offering information so not much to look at. The main keep is six stories high and the stairs to the top get progressively steeper and narrower as you go, you need to be fairly mobile and active to go to the top. I’m reasonably active but not a huge fan of narrow steep steps so bailed out at the fourth floor although the husband carried on to the top. You’ll also need to take your shoes off and carry them in a carrier bag that you’re given after about the second floor.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 May 2023
- Stefanie HLincoln, Nebraska1,598 contributionsGreat castleThe Himeji castle is definitely worth a trip from Osaka or on the way to Hiroshima! It is much nicer and larger than Osaka castle and easy to get to from the train station. You can either take a bus or just walk - you can see it from the exit of the train station. We bought a combination ticket for the castle and Koko-en, the gardens next door. There are lockers to store your belongings right before you enter the castle grounds, as well as restrooms and vending machines for one last drink of water. There is a steep walk up to the entrance of the castle, and then you will walk up steep flights of stairs to get to the top. It's totally doable and totally worth it for the views. You will need to take off your shoes and put them into a bag, so wear or brings socks. We had very few other people there when we visited, so ew got to see everything without obstruction. There is a small shrine at the top, and there are also information displays in English on each floor to tell you the highlights of the building. Highly recommend if you are in the area!Visited June 2023Written 3 July 2023
- Martina1888Inverness, United Kingdom498 contributionsWhite Heron CastleA very impressive castle and if you visit you'll understand why it is so popular. At the entrance you can take a free "Himeji Castle Concierge Book" which is an excellent guide on your tour through the grounds. The stairs in the keep are not as steep and narrow as in other castles I've been to. You can also enter the bailey which houses enlightening exhibitions. There will be crowds but it is definitely worth your visit. Make sure to set aside enough time for your visit and get a combination ticket which gives you entrance to nearby Koko-en.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 November 2023

My sis and I visited Himeji Castle end Nov. We were blown away by the view of the castle on hilltop as soon as we stepped out of the Himeji train station. The himeji Castle’s volunteer English tour guide Hidekazu-san was absolutely fantastic! We enjoyed listening to the history and fun facts he shared with us!

My husband and I visited Himeji Castle with our 2 adult sons. Our local tour guide Jurico was absolutely marvellous. The experience would not have been the same without her....her knowledge, her insights and the interesting way she guided us was superb.

My daughter and I were part of a tour group but were separated early into the visit to the castle (we were left to our own devices once inside the grounds). When we were looking for a locker we were assisted by a very kind Japanese gentleman who found us the cheapest locker plus offered to show us around the castle grounds…for free. Turns out he was a Himeji Castle volunteer and we cannot speak highly enough of him as he made the visit very informative and we came away the richer for it. Very highly recommended, many many thanks to Hide and the excellent guidance he provided over the 90 or so minutes of time he spent with us.
…as for the castle, absolutely amazing and well worth the visit.

Impressive castle. I would highly recommend it.
We were planning to go to Horishima on a day's trip and added a stop to the HImeji castle on our way there. Probably the best castle we visited in Japan.
Recommendation: to control the visits from schools as there was lots of kids running up and down the stairs inside the castle making the whole visit a bit "challenging" :)

Five friends visited on a day trip from Kyoto in early November. Phenomenal castle, easily one of the most impressive and well-kept structures that we saw on our 10 day Japan tour. Definitely worth a visit.

Our wonderful tour guide, Nobu, led and informed us thru the Himeji Castle. This moderate high activity included a long trek across the field, climbing the irregular stone steps and high wooden thresholds, then ascending the short, narrow step ladders to reach the top 8th floor. What a view from the top. Our ticket included visiting the beautiful Himeji Koko-en garden "next door".

Catching the JR ‘rapid train’ we travelled ~100km south of Osaka to the township of Himeji; famous for the “Hakuroju” (White Heron Castle) - because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a white heron taking flight. Dating back to circa 1613, it is world heritage listed - and was worth the trip. Well preserved, it is famous for its (5 storey) central Keep; Moats; Passage ways and surrounding Gardens. We spent quite a few hours exploring. Was really good.

Very popular visitor attraction, around ¥1000 for entry. You'll need some stamina, a couple of hours, and patience. Well worth the climb of 5 floors of steep, narrow old timber stairs, you can see not only the historical castle - the home of samurai, ninjas, and warlords - but also the adjoining gardens. Dating back to 1346, this is a UNESCO site.

Hi. Four of us will arrive by cruise ship at Himeji Port at 10 am in early March. What would be the best way to visit the Himeji Castle independently? I have read that we can catch a bus from the port.

Not sure about how, I assume taxi .
My only advice would be , as you’re going at blossom time as did we this year, to arrive as early as you can as queues build up quickly and entrance was suspended for a while at lunchtime because of the crowds .
The views from outside however are the best, and don’t miss the adjacent gardens that you can include on a combi ticket.

I know this has been asked and answered several times before, but I feel like it needs to be updated given that Japan just opened up recently from Covid closures. Are there luggage storage lockers as we are planning to stop on our way from Kyoto to Hiroshima? How much are they?

Hello! I would like to make a one day trip From Kyoto to Himeji and Osaka and go to Tokyo after 6pm, do you guys think it is possible? I would like to visit Himeji's castle and some parks in Himeji and Osaka's castle and the aquarium in Osaka. Thanks!

If you leave Kyoto around 8 am, you will reach Himeji at 9 am. After spending 3 hours at the castle and the garden, you can reach Osaka Castle around 2pm. After spending 1 hour, you can reach the aquarium around 4pm. After spending 1 hour there and stopping by the hotel you stayed in Kyoto to pick up your stuffs, you can leave Kyoto around 7pm. If me, I'll omit Osaka Castle to leave for Tokyo earlier.

Very easy, you just go to the main train station in Kyoto. I think it was about an hour away.
Hi. Can we bring small backpacks to the castle - is there a cloakroom to store them? Thank you.

We took a small backpack that had our camera and lenses in it. Although we didn’t use the checked bags, I believe there is a place to store some smaller things for a small fee.

Hi everyone! Can you ride a bike inside the Himeji Castle park? I'm worried that it might be too big of a park for walking especially since my parents are in the 50s age group. Their feet might hurt a lot too soon that we might not be able to explore most of the other sites in the park.

The park surrounding the castle could be seen with a bike. However, to get to the main castle it has lots of incline to get to. You can take your time though. Need to climb steep stairs when you get to the tower. Very cool!

We are in the port of Himeji on a cruise ship next week. Does anyone know if you can take a taxi from the port to Himeji Castle? If so, approximate cost?

I wasn't sure of the distant from the Port of Himeji to the Castle, so I Googled it. It shows that it's 8.3 miles or so, and given that it's a cruise, I suspect Taxis will be in abundance. Regardless, see the city and visit the castle. The covered walkways from the train station to the castle had a variety of stores, eateries, and things to see before you reach the castle plaza. Great views from the wooden bridge to get inside the castle grounds, are are photo opportunities well before you reach the ticket office. Take comfortable shoes, it's a good walk (uphill) to reach the top level of the castle. A few steep steps to climb as well since the Shogun's security was well in play back then. Bottom line a wonderful place to visit, a great little city, and something you'll be smiling about for sometime to come. Have a great trip. Hope this helps.
